“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” — Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Many people have heard this famous quote by playwright and poet William Shakespeare in his iconic love tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

The historic 1597 play was set in Verona, Italy, home to this Geocache of the Week ( M.S.G. ) Il Balcone di Giulietta (GC6VA60). Explore the beautiful cobblestone streets and find this geocache near Juliet’s famous balcony.

Verona, a city in northern Italy, has long been a symbol of love. Its most famous attraction, Juliet’s House, with its iconic balcony, is a must-see for fans of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as it plays a pivotal role in the play.

But what’s the connection between this romantic landmark and geocaching? Let’s unravel this unique blend of love and adventure.

Geocachers arrive near GZ’s courtyard and proceed through a Gothic-era entrance portico. The walls host thousands of graffiti hearts, dates, and dedications from lovers.

Once you reach the courtyard of Juliet’s house, you’ll be struck by the building’s ancient exposed walls and the pointed arch. But the bronze statue of Juliet truly captivates the eye, a testament to the enduring power of love.

A common activity of visitors to the area is writing letters to Juliet. Each year, thousands of people worldwide write to Juliet to talk about their love life, and there’s a group of volunteers, known as Juliet’s secretaries, who make sure each letter gets answered.

While the romance of the area makes it easy to get swept away, geocaching adds an exciting twist to the journey. The geocache is cleverly hidden just outside the walls, waiting to be discovered. Listed as a micro, it is tucked away just out of sight of the many visitors who occupy the area daily.

The cache owner, M.S.G. Team, left a hint on the cache page to guide geocachers to the cache quickly to avoid the gaze of wandering eyes. Look for flowers and something magnetic, and the cache will be right where you expect it.

Geocachers can leave behind their geocaching username inked on the logbook and write a love letter to Juliet herself. If they’re lucky enough, a volunteer for Juliet’s secretaries may respond.

“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
