There has never been a better day to care for the geocaching gameboard than today. Earth Day started in 1970 to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire action. As we prepare to celebrate its 55th anniversary on April 22, we want to share some ideas of how you can celebrate Earth Day this year!

Geocaching, a game that owes its existence to our incredible Earth, offers a unique way to connect with the planet. It encompasses every biome imaginable, from tundras to rainforests and everything in between. Each Earth Day, we remember and celebrate the place we call home. Geocachers, with their unique connection to the Earth through geocaching, play a pivotal role in this celebration.

Here are four ways to give back to our planet and celebrate Earth Day through geocaching:

Attend a CITO Event near you
Attending a Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) Event is a great way to give back to the Earth. Every time you collect a bag of trash, clean up a park, or plant a tree, you contribute to our goal of leaving the global geocaching gameboard better than we found it.

Since 2002, more than 773,000 geocachers have attended over 43,000 CITO Events across 152 countries, helping improve the geocaching gameboard. If you attend a CITO Event now through May 31, 2025, you’ll also earn the CITO Season 1 souvenir for your Geocaching profile. Find a CITO Event near you!

Find an EarthCache
An EarthCache is more than just a set of coordinates; it’s a special place that offers a unique learning experience about our Earth’s geoscience features. Geocachers who visit EarthCaches can witness how geological processes shape our planet.

Reuse!
This is the season for some cleaning, an ideal time to declutter and collect miscellaneous items that could be repurposed into new geocaches. Instead of throwing out your trash or recyclables, we suggest you make a cool cache container, some interesting swag, or assign a tracking code and send it off as a trackable. The possibilities are endless!

Get outside
As geocachers, we’re part of an adventurous community that values the power of getting outdoors and spending time in fresh air. This game allows us to appreciate the natural beauty outside our homes and is a respite from our busy lives. Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy all that nature has to offer around us. It’s a chance to connect with fellow geocachers and share our love for the game and the planet.
