Building community through passion: An interview with Micha and Karo of Rucksackabenteuer
Passion, creativity, and community spirit—these are the qualities that define Micha and Karolin, the geocaching power couple from Hamburg, Germany, better known as Rucksackabenteuer. What started as curiosity for geocaching in 2018 has since grown into an influential voice in the German geocaching community.
Read about Micha and Karo’s motivation to inspire others, build connection, champion creativity, and turn their passion into a powerful platform for community engagement.
Geocaching HQ: What’s your background outside of geocaching?
My wife, Karolin, and I have been living in Hamburg, Germany, for many years. We originally come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We’ve been an unbeatable team for almost eight years and happily married for four. During the week, we work our full-time jobs in order to finance our hobbies and everyday things in life. For many years, I have been working for a large logistics company in Hamburg, and Karo is a medical assistant at a large medical center. In addition to our passion for geocaching, we also share the hobby of escape rooms. We even travel around the world to find the best escape room games.

Geocaching HQ: How and when did you hear about geocaching?
At the beginning of 2018, a colleague from work told us about this game, which we initially laughed at and kept asking ourselves, “why would anyone look for Tupperware containers in a forest?” A few weeks later, we spent our vacation on the Baltic Sea coast in Scharbeutz. During a walk on the beach, we thought about this game again, which had been unknown to us until then. We had already downloaded the app on our phone. Our first find was a PETling container at a town entrance sign (GC7G83B). That was when the fire was lit—we almost spent the entire vacation searching for and finding geocaches on the Baltic coast.
Geocaching HQ: Which cache got you passionate about geocaching?
After our first find in 2018 at the Baltic coast, the fire was lit. However, we quickly developed a preference for truly special geocaches—caches that require an appointment, which often are brilliantly realized in secrecy. Germany is clearly a pioneer in this regard, and there are many great cache owners who spare no expense or effort in order to offer the community something special.

Geocaching HQ: Can you explain to those that may not be familiar, what an appointment-style cache is?
An appointment cache is often a very elaborately designed geocache that takes several hours to complete, is often built into a special location. Normally, you have to solve a puzzle to gain access to the calendar. Having a strong network is important here, since these caches are usually booked up very quickly, and the owners often only release limited calendar access. In Germany, we have geocaches that have been built into old houses, construction trailers, caves, or even water towers. The creativity of many cache owners truly knows no bounds.
We have played almost all of the caches in Germany and nearby countries that require an appointment. These are a few that stand out:
- Hafen 1 – Der Handel (NC) (GCA1HXR)
- Vergissmeinnicht (GC6Z4NP)
- Der Fall des Professors Theo von Zettlitz (GCA6MNY)
Geocaching HQ: What type of geocaching content is your favorite to consume (YouTube, Instagram, etc.)?
A few years ago, we regularly watched videos from the geocaching content creator, Kalisa. The two of them always produced very good content. Occasionally, we also watch content from Geocaching Vlogger. Other than that, we use Instagram. On this platform, there are creators who produce good content, and from whom you can get inspiration.

Geocaching HQ: What made you want to be a content creator, and what made you choose geocaching?
We never made a conscious decision. In our early days, we shared our experiences on our Instagram channel and quickly realized that our content was well-received and that we were a source of inspiration for many geocachers. After some time, in addition to our full-time jobs, we became self-employed and started publishing the print magazine Rucksackabenteuer for 3.5 years. As amateurs with a great team, we created a brand that was valued by many, was able to establish itself in the community, and was competitive. Unfortunately, health issues put a stop to that. Having three jobs in total was too much. A good friend (thanks, Tobi) encouraged us to start a WhatsApp channel, and over the last two years, we have been able to grow it into Germany’s largest geocaching channel on the platform.

Geocaching HQ: What is your favorite geocaching memory?
There are many favorite memories. The shared experiences at special geocaches or larger Events, together with friends and acquaintances, remain memorable, as well as the many friendships that have developed over the past years because of this shared hobby. I, Micha, am also a founding member of the association Geocaching Hamburg e.V; which was founded at the end of 2024 with six other Hamburg geocachers. There are many exciting projects in the works, such as the largest current project, GIFF 2025 Hamburg (GCB7WHC), on November 9, 2025. I love the collaboration with other creative geocachers and am convinced that together, we will create many more special memories.
Geocaching HQ: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a geocaching content creator?
We believe that you should stand up for your values and not let anyone convince you otherwise. Be original, stand out from the rest, build strong connections, and most importantly, when everyone runs to the right—stop, look to the left, and consider whether taking the opposite direction could give you the advantage. If you have an idea and are passionate about it, you should put it into practice.
Geocaching HQ: How and where can people find you and your geocaching content?
The platforms we use for our content are Whatsapp and Instagram:

Geocaching HQ: How do you spread awareness about your channel and continue to grow your audience?
It’s important to always stay up-to-date and share various news. Good content generates referrals to the channel, which is how we grow regularly. The channel is colorful and diverse, and it will remain that way. Each post generates new members through recommendations. We have many subscribers who have been with us from the very beginning, appreciate our content, and feel well-informed, which is shown by the surveys we conduct from time to time. There are also many subscribers in our channel who have been members since we published our magazine, and they continue to recommend us. We observe how the channel continues to grow every week—a sign that we are doing many things right with our content.
