Why geocaching attributes matter
Have you ever set out to find a winter-friendly cache… only to discover it was hidden at the base of a pole six feet under snow? (I have!)
Great geocaching outings start with the right expectations. Whether you’re planning a family-friendly afternoon or a long-distance hike, attributes help match the experience to your plans.
What are attributes?
Attributes are icons that communicate what to expect at a cache location. Cache owners may select up to 15 attributes before submitting a listing for review.
Once a cache is published, the attribute icons appear on the right side of the cache listing page on Geocaching.com or in the Geocaching® mobile app. Premium members can use Advanced search to filter for certain attributes in-app.
Some attributes indicate what is available at the cache location — like scenic views, available in winter, or parking nearby. Others indicate what is not available, such as no dogs or not stroller accessible.
Finding a cache? Use attributes to plan!
Premium members can use a filtered search on the Geocaching® app and on Geocaching.com to search for caches with specific attributes.
Caching with family? Filter for Recommended for kids.
Heading out during winter conditions? Look for Available in winter.
Want a scenic payoff? Search for Scenic view.
Looking for a challenge? Try Challenge cache.
Filtered search helps you target caches that match your time, ability level, and goals for the day — before you even leave home.
Hiding a cache? Don’t forget attributes!
Selecting the right attributes when placing a cache helps finders prepare properly. When players know what to expect, they’re more likely to bring the right gear, allow enough time, and have a positive experience while finding your cache.
Attributes can also be added or removed after publication. Reviewing your attributes — especially on older caches — helps ensure your listing reflects the current experience.
Clear information makes better adventures. Attributes are one simple way to set expectations and improve the experience for everyone. A little preparation goes a long way!
