Ask Signal: Volume 5
It’s time for another edition of Ask Signal! We’ve gathered a selection of questions from the geocaching community and asked Signal to share the answers. Let’s dive in!
Why is Signal, the mascot, a frog?
Signal was created in the early days of Geocaching.com to represent the combination of technology and nature. However, Signal isn’t just a frog; he’s a frog with an antenna attached to his head, symbolizing the perfect blend of nature and GPS technology. We searched through the animal kingdom, and we couldn’t find any other antenna-enabled animals besides Signal, so the choice was easy.
What are some interesting or surprising geocaching stats?
We sent our Data Team on a hunt through the data to uncover some interesting geocaching stats worth sharing:
- The average cache available on the gameboard is 7.862633 years old.
- Many geocachers may remember our 2022 attempt to set a Guinness World Record, which spotlighted an incredible milestone in our history. The day with the highest number of unique geocachers logging a find remains August 11, 2013, when 126,673 accounts logged 484,180 finds.
But here’s a statistic you may not know: May 3, 2025, the 25th anniversary of geocaching, became the biggest day ever for total finds. On that historic day, 65,779 accounts logged an astounding 999,529 finds worldwide, just 471 finds shy of one million. It was a fitting way for the global geocaching community to celebrate 25 years of exploration together. - So far in 2026, there have been 203,432 geocaches published, bringing the worldwide total to an incredible 3,471,324 active geocaches waiting to be found.
What are some goals or challenges Lackeys are working on in 2026?
I’m closing in on my “quad Jasmer” . Only two caches to go! I plan to get Marooned (GC20) on a trip to Georgia in July. That just leaves a trip to Match Stash (GC4D) in Sweden, hopefully next year!” – GeoJudt.
My goal is to find 1000 caches this year, and trying to finish the
northwest region of Cache Odyssey, meaning a trip to Alaska! (GT4F0)” – Love.
I’m trying to get caught up on logging my drafts… Currently at 435!” – Giacaches.
How often do you choose new geocaching community volunteer reviewers?
Geocaching is a community-driven game played all around the world. It relies on the support of nearly 400 geocaching community volunteers.
There is no set schedule for choosing new community volunteer reviewers, and Geocaching HQ doesn’t select reviewers directly. Reviewers choose and train each other with guidance from Geocaching HQ, and new reviewers are generally identified in collaboration with the local and global reviewing teams based on a need in the area and each candidate’s skills and experience.
What is being done to expose Gen Z to geocaching?
Introducing geocaching to the next generation is one of our top priorities. We have a dedicated social media and marketing team that develops creative campaigns, experiments with new content ideas, and creates videos that resonate with younger audiences while continuing to engage the geocachers who have been with us since the beginning. From spotlighting community content creators to embracing new social trends and sharing beginner-friendly content, we’re always looking for fresh ways to inspire more people to discover geocaching.
Our goal is straightforward: help the next generation experience the excitement of discovering outdoor adventure through geocaching.
With the addition of treasures last year, can we expect any new features soon?
We’re always exploring new ways to grow the game and support the geocaching community. We can’t share any specifics just yet, but stay tuned for an exciting feature announcement soon! Check out our Facebook page and the Geocaching Blog so you don’t miss upcoming announcements.
