Coiled rattle snake by a geocache

The best geocaching stories

“On a nice summer day, I was walking to a cache in the middle of a small urban woods…” We recently asked geocachers on Facebook to share some of their best geocaching stories and the responses did not disappoint! From encounters with wildlife to landing a job, here are some of the stories we enjoyed the most.

We came upon the scene only to discover that the cache was not where the hint described. It was one fence post down sitting next to a rattlesnake! His head was only an inch or so from the container. Not to be thwarted, I picked up a stick that was long enough to keep me a safe distance from the snake and knocked the cache away. Boy, was he upset!

Fun fact: the image at the top of the blog was taken at the scene of Cathy’s story!

I stopped for a Letterbox on a house doorstep. The cache owner came around the corner from the garage and introduced himself. We both have the same first name and are both software engineers. He said his group was hiring someone with my skills and I was looking for a job after a layoff. He took my resume, I had an interview, and got the job! Geocaching is already my recreational and exercise activity, [and] now geocaching is also my job search program! [My] one year anniversary at the job is coming in March.

I once found a cache in the hollow of a tree in mid-February. Thinking the cache was overfilled with swag, I picked up the plastic snake on top of the cache. Then, I picked up the cache and realized that I had a live snake in my other hand. That got the adrenaline pumping on a cold winter day!

On a nice summer day, I was walking to a cache in the middle of a small urban woods. There was an obvious tree with a hole at the bottom, and my GPS was pointing right toward it. As I approached, I tripped over a branch and made some other noise. When I looked back at the hole, the upside-down face of a raccoon was staring out at me! Glad I tripped!
