Adventure Lab Spotlight: The Kootenay River Dams and Power Stations

Discover the natural beauty of British Columbia in Canada and awe-inspiring achievements of engineering as we explore The Kootenay River Dams and Power Stations. This Adventure takes explorers to five different dams and power stations between Nelson and Castlegar, British Columbia. Whether you’re interested in seeing beautiful sights or learning more about how flowing water provides power to millions of homes, this Adventure does not disappoint.

The first Location of the sequential Adventure is at the Brilliant Dam, where the Kootenay river rushes through just northwest of its confluence with the Columbia River. Once you arrive at the Location you’ll need to find information to answer a question about the turbine used in the expansion of the dam that was completed in 2007. After learning about the machinery, you can step back and take in the sound of the coursing water and the view of the craggy gray rock and deep green trees stretching out away from the river.

For the rest of the Adventure, you’ll have to head northwest along the Kootenay river. As you take in each Location, you’ll learn about waterwheel generators and spillways, and get a better sense of the history of the Kootenay region of Canada in the 20th century when all the dams were built.

Completing this Adventure will probably require using a car. The Adventure’s creator Jabb&Jazz helpfully provides tips for where to find parking in the Location descriptions. With all there is to see and the hiking trails near the Locations, it could make for a lovely day trip.
