Tips for turning friends into geofriends

Geocaching is better with friends. Having a buddy with you on a cache outing makes searching for caches easier and more fun, and it creates memories that you’ll both reminisce about for years to come. In a perfect world, all our friends would know exactly what we’re talking about when we say “There’s a new multi published at the park by my place! I need a new cache for my streak. Want to find it this afternoon? Don’t forget to bring your TOTTs!” Alas, we all have friends who don’t know geocaching well or maybe even at all. That means that we have the chance to introduce them to the joys of geocaching and bring them into their new favorite hobby! Read on for tips on how to share geocaching with non-geocacher friends and build your geocaching community.

Start with an Adventure
If you’re sharing geocaching with someone who is totally unfamiliar with it, try starting with an Adventure. Finding the answers to the questions at each Location of an Adventure can be a bit easier than finding a cache’s hiding place, and they double as fun guided tours!

Pair geocaching with another activity
Rather than inviting your non-geocaching friends to join a big blowout all day geocache outing, ease them into the game by pairing a search for one geocache with another activity you and your friend enjoy. For example, add a nearby geocache to a weekend coffee catch-up.

The more the merrier
Geocaching is a great group activity and family friendly activity. If you’re planning to meet with multiple non-geocaching friends or friends with kids, make a group hangout of it and have everyone join the search. If your friends have a competitive spirit, you could even add an extra game to it by seeing who can find the most geocaches first.

Vacation destination
If you’re traveling with non-geocaching friends, add some of the caches you’ve bookmarked for the trip to the travel itinerary. Odds are, there is some kind of cool Traditional Cache near a special destination you’re visiting, so it’s easy to fit it into other plans. You can invite your friends to help you make the find and share the special hidden world of geocaching with them.

Picture show
When you have non-geocaching friends that are more visual learners, introduce them to the game by sharing one of our social media channels with them. Our Instagram is a great place to start because it allows people to see how much fun geocachers have with the game and how creative some cache hiders get.
