Here is everything you wanted to know (and then some) about the Lackey geocoins.

The original Lackey coin, released in 2005, featured digital icons of Signal the Frog and the 12 HQ Lackeys. It was not available for purchase. In fact, the coin was “owned” by Signal! Lucky geocachers might receive one when they visited HQ or met a Lackey.

The second Lackey coin debuted in 2007 with a colorful design showing Signal and 26 Lackeys. As with the first coin, it was owned by Signal the Frog and only available as a gift from Lackeys.

The Lackey coin became an annual tradition in 2009. This version featured Signal and 25 Lackey icons. (Though, Lackeys’ names were not included for the first and only time.) It was the first Lackey coin to be available for purchase.

The 2010 coin, showing Signal and 42 Lackeys, celebrated the 10th anniversary of geocaching. It was the first Lackey coin designed by HQ, and one of the first coins ever designed by the company. The coin was released at 2010 GeoWoodstock in Carnation, Washington.

Signal was front and center on the 2011 coin, which was the first designed by HQ’s Roxxy. It was the first Lackey coin to be produced in two finishes. Silver was available for purchase, while the gold version was a gift from Lackeys. The digital icons of Signal and 60 Lackeys are represented.

In 2012, Signal and 67 Lackeys were shown on the coin. The satin silver finish was available for purchase, while satin gold was a gift from Lackeys. Multiple finishes would not return until 2017.

The 2013 coin included 69 Lackeys and was the first hinged coin produced by HQ. It was also the first Lackey coin to come with a trackable tag. Random tidbit: this was the first time Signal was not included on the Lackey coin. Second random tidbit: the coin was introduced at the 2013 Geocaching Block Party in Seattle. When the coins arrived the day before the party, staff discovered a problem with the coin hinges. HQ’s merchandising team worked into the night and up to the opening of Block Party to check hinges on every coin!

The 2014 coin was hinged with a companion trackable tag. There are 66 Lackeys featured.

The 2015 coin looks like a steampunk inspired pocket watch, which opens to reveal images of 77 Lackeys.

The armillary sphere, a model of celestial longitude and latitude, inspired the design of the 2016 coin, which features 73 Lackeys.

Two versions of the 2017 coin were produced, antique silver and satin gold. The satin gold finish was only available at the HQ Visitor Center. Both versions included a trackable tag. The coin features digital icons of 77 Lackeys.

The 2018 coin is a yearbook design showing 79 Lackeys. It was offered in antique silver and an antique gold that was only available at the HQ Visitor Center. Both versions included a trackable tag.

In 2019, a unique three-panel hinged design highlighted HQ’s Seattle neighborhood on one side and the digital icons of 73 Lackeys once unfolded. Finishes were silver and a gold that was available only at the HQ Visitor Center. A trackable tag was included.

The 2020 coin is a big one at approximately three inches in diameter and 1/8 inches thick. The Lackey symbol is featured first and foremost, surrounded by icons representing different teams and daily life at HQ. Signal is shown alongside the icons of 80 Lackeys. The coin is available in antique silver at Shop Geocaching and in an antique gold finish that can only be purchased at the HQ Visitor Center (once we’re open again!) The coin comes with a trackable tag.

 

 

The 2021 Lackey coin is a 3D ammo can featuring 81 Lackeys. The coin, which comes with a trackable tag, was available in antique silver at Shop Geocaching and in an antique gold finish that could only be purchased at the HQ Visitor Center.

 

 

The 2022 Lackey coin is a recreation of a curio cabinet. Open the cabinet doors to see the pixel icons of the 91 Lackeys and Signal. Designed by HQ’s Roxxy, the coin includes a trackable tag, and was available in a satin silver finish from Shop Geocaching, and in an antique gold finish at the HQ Visitor Center.

 

The 2023 Lackey coin is truly unique, featuring a trackable lily pad attached to a large two piece hinged geocoin. Open it up to find the personal icon of all of those who work at Geocaching HQ to support the geocaching community. You can even find a bonus tracking number under the lily pad! A trackable tag is also included with a third unique tracking code. The coin is available in a silver finish from Shop Geocaching, and in a gold finish at the HQ Visitor Center. As with all Lackey coins since 2011, it was designed by HQ’s Roxxy.
