Announcing the April Featured Geocacher of the Month

Many people recognize April’s Featured Geocacher of the Month for their hospitality and ability to host and organize numerous geocaching gatherings. Congratulations to Milosheart for being named April’s featured Geocacher of the Month!

Lackeys were greatly impressed with the tight number of votes that pushed this power couple to take the lead. Many acknowledged that Milosheart is no stranger when it comes to the success of geocaching in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

April Featured Geocachers of the Month, Milosheart

As one geocacher casting a vote put it, “the fun we have had is due to their laid back but encouraging way of introducing people to the sport.  They have held social gatherings as well educational events at their house where all are invited and made to feel at home. They have a lot of experience and knowledge to share and an easy way of going about it.  They are excellent organizers as shown by the overwhelming success of this year’s contest and banquet.  New people are joining the Fredericton club weekly (if not daily) due to their leadership.  I guess what I am trying to say is: They are excellent ambassadors of the sport.”

Milosheart will receive a collector’s edition Featured Geocacher of the Month Geocoin, along with a Geocacher of the Month hat and certificate acknowledging their contributions signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

Thank you to the fellow April nominees and all those who supported them. Those nominees not chosen as the featured Geocacher of the Month receive a gift of appreciation from Groundspeak. See a list of all the featured Geocachers of the Month here.

The geocaching community is encouraged to re-nominate those who have yet to be honored as featured Geocacher of the Month.

Here are your nominees for the April Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Milosheart

Milosheart

Nominated by vbpad, Gwen and Terry, a.k.a. Milosheart, “have been very instrumental in the success of geocaching in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. They have been hosting a monthly breakfast in various locations in Fredericton and have organized a winter geocaching contest for the past three years, with the third annual wrap-up event just finishing this month. Not only have they put so much of their time into organizing events and contests, but they still take the time to greet and welcome new cachers in the area.”

 Isle

Isle

Nominated by geo-traveler, “Team Isle, Isle and Karl, a.k.a. Charly, together count for 163 years of life. Both have always been nature lovers and are in constant panic mode of falling rusty if they don’t exercise every day. For eight years now, Charly starts his laptop every evening and prepares the geocaching tour for the next day. Without fear, Isle and Charly search even for T5-caches in their hometown of Munich and in the near mountains of the Alps. They do not back off from crawling into dark and ugly tunnels, and they don’t fear high mountains or deep canyons if there might be the chance of a geocache. Night caching? No problem at all! I remember Christmas Eve 2008 with minus 20 degrees Celsius, when we hunted through the Holy Night for a cache whilst other families were sitting in front of their Christmas trees.”

Frog Dog and Corker

Frog Dog and Corker

With several nominations under their belt, Frog Dog and Corker, a.k.a. Jerry and Gina, are best described by Mermaid&Hornytoad as “very active in geocaching. They host an event at least once a year, sometimes twice. They have hidden some of the most unique and creative caches and have close to 5000 finds under their belt. They encourage newbies in their finding and placing caches. They are major supporter of geocaching in southeast New Mexico and just recently sponsored an event to honor the 100th Anniversary of New Mexico Statehood.”

Groundspeak Weekly Newsletter – April 4, 2012

This Week…

Be a Better Hider

Being a better hider begins long before a lucky adventurer claims a FTF (First to Find) on your brand new geocache. It even begins before you submit your freshly hidden geocache for review. Some geocachers are already experts at hiding great caches. For the rest of us, here are four quick pointers to be a better hider.

1 — Land Owner or Manager Permission
Make sure to get permission from the land owner or manager before placing a geocache – even many public locations require permission. This step will help to offer a great experience to geocachers without them being concerned about seeking the cache at that location, and means you won’t need to worry about cache removal.

2 — Location
Geocaching guides treasure-seekers to a precise set of coordinates. The adventure begins there. Make sure that “there” is the right “there.” You should double (even triple) check your coordinates using a dedicated GPS receiver. Avoid using smartphones to establish coordinates for new geocaches.

3 — Weather Proofing
Do your best to ensure the cache and the log sheet are weather proof. A soggy log sheet can dampen the joy of geocaching. See examples of great geocache containers that help keep the log and contents of the cache dry.

4 — Creative Caching
Place the geocache in a location you would like people to visit. Ask yourself, “Would I show my favorite person in the world this geocache?” Is the geocache placed in a scenic overlook? Does it reveal a hidden history or is the geocache experience creative? If you answered at least one “yes,” you’re on the right rack to placing a great cache. Check out some creative cache ideas here.

You can learn even more. Get to know the geocaching guidelines. Your geocache needs to meet all the guidelines before it is published.
