Extraterrestrial Geocachers? — Head Alien Series (GC253ZN) — Geocache of the Week

Geocache Name:

Head Alien #01–51

(Here’s the bookmark list with all 51 caches)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

1.5/2

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

One of the best parts about geocaching is that there are plenty of ways to play. Some geocachers are all about finding creative containers, others are all about the numbers and some are all about the big picture—literally. Individually these 51 geocaches in the Nevada desert that make up this series might not be the most interesting finds, but when you put them together you get something incredible. And considering that yesterday a geocaching Travel Bug® launched into space, the shape you come up with is pretty appropriate. This isn’t the only piece of geo-art in the world. In fact, geocachers have been creating art out of geocaches for years. Other shapes include a peace sign, a UFO, people and animals.

What Clay4 & whtwolfden, the geocache owners, have to say:

“Having our Head Alien Geo-art series selected for Geocache of the Week is a tremendous honor. After placing the E.T. Highway Mega-Trail, we thought it would be a nice surprise for everyone who attended the kick-off event to release the Head Alien series. We coordinated with our local reviewer for the Head Alien series to be published during the E.T. Trail event. The planning, travel time to reach the area, and actual placement of the caches took several days worth of work. The series takes roughly 3 to 4 hours to walk the nearly 7 mile design.

We love to read the logs and hear about the adventures people have out there. It’s what motivates us to do more. We’d like everyone to know how much we appreciate their efforts in the continued upkeep of the E.T. Highway Mega-Trail as well as both the Head Alien and U.F.O. series. We also want to say a heartfelt Thank You to everyone for their unwavering support of all our projects and events. It’s what inspires us to continue doing what we do.”

What geocachers are saying:

“This was an awesome cache series to do at night. Thanks for the hunt.” – graylling

“The walk around the alien head was fun and well worth the smilies we got. Thanks for putting these caches out here!” – Team_JLKC

“Had a blast taking on this sweet geo-art design today on our first day caching in Nevada.” – fox-and-the-hound

Happy Halloween! – Geist des Hagen (GC11JM6) – Geocache of the Week

Geocache Name:

Geist des Hagen (GC11JM6)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

1.5/2

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

There’s no better day than Halloween to venture into the dark woods of Germany to hunt for one of the country’s most favorited geocaches. Geist des Hagen (in English: Ghost of Hagen) is modeled after Das Nibelungenlied (The Song of the Nibelungs), an old tale of love, war and betrayal in which Hagen is a character. Spoiler alert: Hagen dies. And now his spirit, forever unable to rest, haunts this geocache and those who dare seek it out. Apparently Hagen isn’t a very scary ghost because thousands of geocachers have made the find. And of those that have found it, many of them have awarded it a Favorite Point. While the story this geocache is based on is from ancient times, the geocache is very much up-to-date. This geocache includes electronic components and even a voice module.

# of Finds:

5,611

# of Favorite Points:

2,836, which makes it the second-most favorited geocache in all of Germany

What die Helden, the geocache owner, has to say:

“After this great feedback to this cache we did the other caches of the “Nibelungensage”, and now there are 10 caches from this series and some of them are made with even more mechanic and electronic “specials”. And when we do our caches we pay special attention to the water and weather proof stages, so we don’t need so much maintenance. For example we use many pieces from the car industry. It’s fun to do this caches and to interact with cachers.”

What geocachers are saying:

(Translated from German)

“Fantastic, this is how caching should be, if your expectations are high because a cache already has 3000 favorite points: absolutely spectacular! Too bad you cannot give more than 1 favorite point. With amazed awe, Team Osterhasl” – Osterhasl

“We came here only because of the favorite points to see what could be a cache like that to collect so many favos. This truly is worth every favorite point it has and more… One of the best caches we have ever found!” – Black_Island

It’s the Spookiest Time of Year — Manunka Chunk Tunnels (GC82B5) — Geocache of the Week

Geocache Name:

Manunka Chunk Tunnels (GC82B5)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

3/3

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

As the end of October nears and Halloween draws close, the air has a certain chill to it. The trees turn into skeletons of their former selves. At least, for me, Halloween is one of the best times of year and always puts me in the mood to visit spooky or haunted places. The Manunka Chunk Tunnels in New Jersey have been abandoned since sometime in the early 1900s—well, let me clarify: abandoned from their intended use. Intrepid urban explorers and geocachers have been visiting these tunnels for years. In order to earn your smiley, you’ll have to summon loads of bravery, don a sturdy pair of mud-proof boots and journey through darkness. Sounds like a perfect fall adventure to me!

# of Favorite Points:

117, which makes it the most favorited geocache in New Jersey.

What geocachers are saying:

“Manunka Chunk Tunnels” still the most memorable and amazing cache we’ve ever found!” – The Brigadier

“This was, by far one of my favorite caches to date.” – pumpkinking27

“Great cache! Awesome place!” – cuteynewt

Cooking Up a Good Find — KochBuchCache (GC21148) — Geocache of the Week

After a good day of geocaching, nothing tops off the satisfaction of earning a few smileys like something delicious to eat. But what to choose? One person can only eat so many energy bars. Trail mix is delicious, but never quite quells the hunger. Candy bars aren’t very healthy. If you’re stuck deciding what your post-caching meal will be, all it takes to solve your dilemma is one trip to this week’s Geocache of the Week.

KochBuchCache (GC21148) translates to Cookbook Cache, so you can probably tell where this one is headed. Each geocacher that finds this difficulty 1.5, terrain 1.5 geocache is encouraged to leave their favorite recipe in the logbook. While, of course, it’s not a logging requirement, many geocachers have left all sorts of recipes for other geocachers. The geocache creators, TTLL and RAJJ said, “We love cooking (and eating …) and geocaching – so we wanted to create a geocache that combines our favourite hobbies.” And regarding all of the recipes the logbooks are filled with, “About once a month I add recipes that have been sent to me by mail and 2 or 3 times a year I put a new book in the cache – then we check the recipes and try some.”

If this photo doesn’t make your mouth water and convince you to find this geocache, you might need to check your pulse. Photo by geocacher HAE-Haie

So far over 930 geocachers have earned their smiley for this geocache and awarded it nearly 375 favorite points. The result? TTLL says that so far, “There are 5 (!) books with hundreds of recipes, but I really can’t say which is the best. They are so different and it’s exactly this diversity we love!” One geocacher who left a recipe was familie.schupp, who said (translated from German), “The most exciting part was the hide. Not often do we have so much fun with cache construction. A really great idea! The log book now includes our recipe for spicy chocolate mousse.”

For now, this is just an amazing geocache, but it may become more than that in the near future. TTLL says, “Since I am often asked about it: I hope I will find the time to make it a real book someday. This would allow more people to enjoy the result.” All this talk about food and geocaching is making me hungry. What’s your favorite post-caching food? Tell us in the comments.

Sometimes Geocaching Makes You Go… — Nuts (GC41D4C) — Geocache of the Week

Can you spot the geocache? Photo by Tattletales
Can you spot the geocache? Photo by Tattletales

Many of us know it: geocaching can be addicting. It can even make you go a little cache-crazy. Once you have your first “OMG! I found it!” moment, you’re hooked. For those of us in the geocaching community, we know the feeling. For other people who haven’t been introduced to the fun, it might seem like we’re a little nuts. This week’s Geocache of the Week celebrates all of the geocaching nuts throughout the world, because, like the geocache owner says, “After all, is there anyone nuttier than a geocacher?”

Nuts (GC41D4C) might seem like another creative looks-like-part-of-the-tree container, but it’s so much more than that. The geocache doubles as a functioning squirrel feeder, so don’t be surprised if you make a furry friend on your geocaching adventure. Also, it’s placed with permission and not in a way that harms the tree. Once you open the first door to the geocache, the fun begins. Geocachers must solve a moving-square puzzle in order to access the geocache. The geocache creators, Tattletales, tells the story of how this geocache came to be, “It took a full week to design and draw up this nutty cache, and another week to construct it.  It’s a challenge to make caches ‘cacher proof’, but strangely enough, this one has never had a mechanical failure!” And regarding keeping this geocache in tip-top shape, they say, “I do spend time adjusting and repairing my caches.  That’s why I plant them close to home.”

The puzzle. If you can't solve it, you can always just eat some of the nuts out of the squirrel feeder part. Photo by Tattletales

The more that 200 geocaching nuts who have solved the puzzle and earned their smiley have awarded this geocache over 150 favorite points so far. They’ve also left many positive logs, like geocacher doogelah, who said, “I really enjoy this sort of cache, where the hunt isn’t too difficult, but the construction is top notch, and you have to engage your brain to finish the task. The first of several favorite points I’m going to award this evening. Thank you for putting such effort in to make caches that are worth a little extra drive!”

Regarding all of the positive logs and favorite points, Tattletales says “[We] are delighted with the posts we receive on our caches.  The posts make it all worthwhile.  Reading the posts in the evening is great fun for both of us.  And yes, receiving favorite points is fun too!” And they have a piece of advice for the geocaching community: “Every cache has a value.  They can be in an interesting place, have a fun factor, or just be somewhere that gets you out of your chair to do a bit of exercise.”

A creative geocache like this is the perfect example of the type of geocache that can turn a day-to-day geocacher into a geocaching nut. What geocache solidified your geocaching passion? Tell us in the comments.
