Each month the global geocaching community meets three outstanding geocachers. Their task is to help decide which one will be known forevermore as a Geocacher of the Month. This month, we’re fittingly deciding the May Geocacher of the Month. So to the all the geocachers listed below… May the Geocacher of the Month be with you.

The geocachers showcased below lead by example—thousands and thousands of examples. While their find counts are superhuman, they’re more than personable to new geocachers, and more than amazing when it comes to geocache hides.

Each of the nominees below is an essential part of the global geocaching community and will receive a prize package from Geocaching HQ in Seattle, but only one will be the next Geocacher of the Month. A  panel from Geocaching HQ will use your comments, community input and other data to decide the winner.

meandmydogs2 – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Bandyrooster writes, “Kim, “meandmydogs”, is such an enthusiastic New Hampshire geocacher! She has been geocaching since 2005 and has 14,493 finds in 29 states and 2 countries. She has promoted geocaching by putting out or sponsoring 561 caches, 64 of them having been event caches. She runs the largest event in NH every year with the goal of making it a mega event this year. Her daily find rate is 4.49 for the almost 9 yrs she has been caching. She has found caches on each day of the calendar and one or more of each difficulty and terrain type. Her longest caching streak is 499 days with her longest non-caching streak only 17 days. The list of other challenges she has completed is too long to mention.
Kim is friendly and welcoming to every new cacher and has worked very hard to promote geocaching in New England. She is the backbone of caching in our state and everyone loves going along with Kim on a caching adventure! If anyone has a question about geocaching Kim is the go to person. Kim is so deserving of being cacher of the month!”

sadexploration – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Sludge Bucket writes, “I would like to nominate Steve primarily for has work in starting the Church Micro series within the UK. This series is probably the largest series of geocaches in the world! There are currently over 5000 throughout the UK, giving much pleasure to the UK caching community. Church Micros are caches near Churches throughout the UK, from St Paul’s Cathedral in London to village churches in the wilds of the countryside. Steve has found over 15,000 caches and owns nearly 230. The quality of his caches is exceptional. Steve has been caching since August 2004. His series at Devil’s Dyke, Sussex in the UK has many favorite points. All in all I believe Steve is a worthy recipient of Geocacher of the month. I hope you think so too!”

Mr. Gadget #2

Mr Gadget 2 – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Barnabirdy(s) writes, “Mr. Gadget #2 has frequently been the inspiration and driving force behind Geocaching in his area. He has served as Chapter Representative several times and single handedly has drummed up the support and membership to keep our sometimes struggling Chapter alive.
His caching name fits him perfectly; he seems to possess every gadget applicable to Geocaching and is always ready to share his experience with other cachers, experienced as well as newbies.
From his first cache hide he quickly gained the reputation for creating original and challenging hides with a new slant on caching. Finding Mr. Gadget’s caches is not usually difficult, then the real trick is figuring out how to gain access to the contents.”

In a tough decision, the irrepressibly enthusiastic hurleyanne is named the Geocacher of the Month for April 2014. One comment reads, “She’s enthusiastic about teaching others and makes sure no one is excluded. She’s a superb asset to the geocaching community!”

Another read, “She is one of the most generous cachers around, always quick to offer assistance to newbie cachers online and in person, and has the experience to back it up. She has taken it upon herself to compile lists of caches in the area that need maintenance and organize maintenance for those geocaches by those willing to help, and other interesting ‘bucket lists’ of caches, that inspire people to get out of town and explore our beautiful province. Just to show how much she enjoys the friends she has made through geocaching, she made her own wedding into a geocaching event!”

Sometimes continents must choose. Welcome to an all North American edition of Geocacher of the Month. This month we’re introduced to three geocaching community champs from North America. They’re already winners: recognized by their local communities, placers of inventive and well-loved geocaches and all-around advocates for new geocachers to join the adventure.

Your comments below help decide who takes home the earned, never-for-sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin. Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive the special edition Geocoin, a hat and a profile icon. They’ll also receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

iPajero was named the Geocacher of the Month for March for helping unite the geocaching community in South Africa. One comment read, “We’d sum them up as a mix of irrepressible energy, indefatigable commitment to finding caches and a clever impish sense of humour when creating their own caches!”

Hurleyanne started caching in July 2006 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was one of a handful of people who started the Saskatoon and Area Geocaching Association in 2011 and has been on the executive since March 2013. This group hosts a 24 [hour] event each year, which includes a midnight “dine and dash”, a pancake breakfast and finishes with a BBQ. Well over 100 cachers attend this event every year and appreciate all the hard work that Hurleyanne and her fellow executive members put into it. In March of 2013 she traveled to California and Arizona to find a number of Route 66 caches by herself. She had such a great time that she returned in March of 2014 with a couple of other cachers from Saskatoon to do the TS trail in Nevada as well as approximately 400 caches on the ET trail. During the month of March she found 2907 caches with her most successful day being March 18th when she found 717 caches.

zacknmom is a well rounded cacher in the Black Hills of South Dakota. You will find her name in about every logbook and more. She is crazy enough to cache at dusk, dawn, at night, in the cold & heat. Because of her drive to geocache, she has made it fun for those of us who cache with here too.

zacknmom has been active in geocaching events, CITOs and had events of her own. She has some really fun hiking caches. If a person needs help finding a cache she is always there to lend a hand. The stories she tells are so funny about her adventures! zacknmom takes a lot of pictures so we can enjoy her adventure as if we were there with her. One thing I know for sure, if you hide a cache, she is going to find it. With over 6.600 finds, it would be hard to stump her even if you tried.

Baytown Bert

You can’t help but get caught up in his enthusiasm for geocaching and life itself. He writes the funniest logs in the caches he finds, posts funny pictures of himself, had been known to wear a funny hat, wig, fake teeth, anything that would let people know when Bert is around – things are going to be out of this world fun and surprising.

Bert is real active in his community by organizing and participating in teaching geocaching classes, hosts events including CITOs, mentors geocachers, maintains several web pages not only about geocaching but Baytown as a whole. He meets and works with local community leaders about geocaching and has a set of goals to make geocaching better, safer, more fun, train other geocachers in nearby towns to be able to teach geocaching in their communities “pass it on” if you will.

Geocachers from around the globe commented on their favorite geocachers, even if they only know them through their glowing reputation. It’s a small geocaching world out there and through nominees,  the worldwide community learned about three amazing geocachers this month.

A geocaching pioneer from a progressive geocaching state in the U.S. claimed the title of January’s Geocacher of the Month: MikeOtt.

One comment reads, “He is not the reason I joined Geocaching but he is certainly one of the reasons I am still involved. He has taken a huge role in our state with organizing events and special caches. He has a unique way of finding the “right spot” for a cache. Always an educational experience in one way or another. Thanks. Mike for all you do for new cachers as well as veteran cachers!!”

The creator of a “school” for geocache hiders, an extreme geocacher with hides along mountain trails and the person who’s the glue that helps bind an entire state of geocachers together. We’re honoring each of these nominees for Geocacher of the Month for their contributions to the geocaching community. Each will receive worldwide recognition and a prize package from Geocaching HQ in Seattle, but which will be named Geocacher of the Month?

In December, Siig was named Geocacher of the Month.

One geocacher who commented wrote, “Hands down winner this month must be siig! There is a reason why they are by far the team in Denmark with most favourite votings (and not just 100 as hinted above….almost 2800 favourites received!). You always leave one of their hides with a silent smile or a big and noisy laugh, as they are most often very innovative and funny caches. Their caches are well kept and always an experience.”

 Mike Ott

Tim Werbrich writes, “MikeOtt is Delaware’s Geocaching Ambassador and the Presidential leader of the Delaware Geocachers.  Mike has over 16,500 finds and owns over 300 caches!  Mike took the lead in creating the Delaware Geocaching Trail in conjunction with Delaware Tourism.  This trail of about 70 caches takes cachers over scenic trails and to unique attractions throughout Delaware.  He also created the C & D Canal Power Trail, a trail of over 150 caches that border the scenic Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.  Mike also began the First State Challenge, an annual challenge series of caches in each of Delaware’s 3 counties.  There are a lot more things he does for geocaching.

Mike is passionate about caching, but he also promotes caching throughout the state and region.  Mike is at every event and CITO.  He encourages others to give back to caching as well.  I think he is the glue that keeps caching alive in Delaware.  Mike is the perfect example of a ambassador to geocaching.  Having cached with him in Alaska and the Northwest US, I know first hand his passion for caching.  It is my honor to nominate him as Geocacher of the Month!”

 Kalleson

Stephan from Gonzo&Xuni writes, “Kallesons real name is Martin Hanneken. He is Co-Founder of our Geocaching Verein “Geocaching im Emsland e.V.”

He is an active part of our local geocaching community. Martin owns a mixed variety of geocaches, such as night caches, really difficult mystery caches and a nice range of clever traditional hides.

What makes him a good candidate as a geocacher of the month is the fact, that he developed a “Geocaching Owner School” which he offers as part of event caches in our local region.

Goal of these school events is to make new and old cachers aware of our guidelines, do’s and don’ts, rules, and all other aspects. Attendees of his “Owner school” will learn how to do it right.

His efforts to train and make people understand the basics of our hobby makes Martin a very good candidate for the geocacher of the month.

He owns one of the best Night caches in our local area. “The Hunt @ Night”

 

CKayaks

 

Natalie Gray (Coralteach) writes, “I would like to nominate Cass Kalinski, otherwise known as CKayaks, for Geocacher of the Month. He not only finds all sorts of high terrain caches, etc…himself, he also places a lot of caches for others to enjoy, including an entire challenging trail in one of our largest parks. Even more than that though, is what he gives back to the geocaching community. Besides placing caches, he holds GREAT events. For two years in a row he has hosted a big event in Los Banos, CA.

He puts out 50 caches and cachers come from miles around to go out and have fun for the day. This year they were all puzzles, which was really great, and a lot of additional work for him!  He had really great coins made up for both last year and this year, and it is becoming an annual event, and could even develop into a Mega Event! In addition, he hosts CITO events, and has one coming up on Jan. 18th. His caches are clever and fun, his stats are incredible, but the time and effort he goes through to host events, is incredible. His events draw cachers from all over the Bay Area, down to the Central Coast, and turns us into a community. I don’t think you’ll find a more well rounded cacher, or anyone more deserving of the award for Geocacher of the Month. He is a legend around here, and truly merits this award.”
