CITO: Do something for your community

Written by our featured content partner, Adam from UK Cache Mag. UK Cache Mag is a bi-monthly magazine all about geocaching in the United Kingdom. It is available in print or digital formats and shares stories, tips, and more!

Over the years there have been all types of CITO Events, but many associate them with litter picking. Having started on March 1 and running through the end of May, Geocaching HQ is offering the first CITO season for 2019 and with over 800 events around the world already on the calendar, why not join in helping to plant trees, repair gates and stiles, rebuild dry stone walls, and help dredge canals at one of these events?

Here are three ways you can contribute to CITO season:

  1. Have a look at this list of nearby CITO events and see what you and your new and existing geo-friends could do as volunteers.
  2. Plan your own CITO event! Take some time to learn about a new-to-you conservation technique and try it out at an event.
  3. Practice CITO every time you geocache! Find a loop of geocaches, invite a group of cachers to meet you at the starting point, gather tools and bin bags, and start out together finding caches and making the series nicer for others by trimming back overgrown vegetation and clearing up rubbish along the way.

We are already familiar with our usual TOTT (tools of the trade) but if we invest in a CITO tool bag (gloves, bin bags, etc.) too, then we’ll make the experience better for everyone. How do you CITO? Share in the comments!
