Art comes in many different forms. It’s the shine of fresh ink on a logbook. It’s the sunset over the horizon after a whole evening of night caching. It’s remembering that you have a pen in the car when you thought all hope was lost.

Geocachers know better than anyone that art can be found in the most unlikely places. There’s something beautiful about the art of exploring just for the sake of exploring, and hoping to chance upon something extraordinary in the midst of everyday life.

Our Geocache of the Week flawlessly demonstrates that feeling as it asks players to take a moment among the hustle and bustle of a big city to ask themselves, “where could it be?” Take a second to pause and appreciate the art with us at our Geocache of the Week, Hidden from view (GC6BEFH).

We begin in Bucharest, a city of 1.8 million people and a rich urban history. In a metropolis like this, it’s easy for details to go unnoticed. Details like… a geocache hidden in a wall right outside Revolution Square, that hundreds of people walk by daily.

One of the many street art installations that line this urban space, the cache hiding location has an edge in its uniqueness. Behind the layers of paint are dozens of mugs, cans, and vessels embedded into the wall.

Not much information is available about this piece, and most people may not notice it, especially with new coats of paint constantly being added to further camouflage the 3D aspect. And yet, there’s just something about this piece that catches a geocacher’s keen eye.

By this point, we hope you asked yourself, “is it hidden in one of the mugs?” Because that is where the mind of a true explorer would go. Geocachers tend to think about where the coolest possible hiding location would be, and start the search there. If you’re thinking in this mindset, you’d be correct.

With that out of the way, the only question left to ask yourself is, “which one?”

After a thorough search high and low, inside and under, the geocache finally reveals itself, tucked away in one of the many vessels lodged in the wall. It may be micro in size, but it’s a large triumph!

Despite holding victory itself in your hand, the city continues on, oblivious. That’s yet another way that geocaching is like art: geocachers solve thousands of little mysteries every day, finding treasures where no one ever thinks to look.

As every great artist must sign their work, it’s time to sign your username on the logbook and replace the cache so that the celebration of art and triumph can exist for the next visitor.

This geocache may be hidden from view, but the beauty of the moment is plain to see. Geocaching takes you out of the routine of everyday life—just for a moment, just long enough to recognize the amazing world around you. Geocaching is art.
