October Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comment

The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month Geocoin (sun flare optional)

You know you’re a geocacher if…

  • You talk to into your GPS as if it’s a cell phone when a muggle walks by…
  • The 1 Dollar/Euro store makes you happier than Disneyland…
  • You’ve been to a CITO event (Cache In, Trash Out), and…
  • You’ve been nominated for Geocacher of the Month!

This month, these three awesome people know for certain that they’re geocachers (in case they had any doubts before).

Here’s your opportunity to  help decide who will take home the earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin (at left). Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive the exclusive special edition geocoin, a hat and profile icon. They’ll also receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

Capt Biggins

Known as Capt Biggins, The Capt, or sometimes simply Bill, this geocacher is a great asset to the local geocachers of the Tampa Bay area. “First and foremost,” says geocacher oldrocknmetal, “Capt Biggins holds an annual Cache In, Trash Out (CITO) event on a mile of beach that he has adopted in Pinellas County. These CITOs are cherished by the residents and county personnel alike. In 2013, he even set up 31 events for the month of August so everyone had the opportunity to get all the souvenirs. Capt Biggins has a big heart too. He has created travel bugs in which all the proceeds go to a geocacher with MS. He has aso created a petition to try to bring the GPS Adventures Exhibit to the area. And of course, The Captain is a wealth of information for the geocaching world.Anything from hiding a cache to creating a cache page to hosting an event to locating a specific Geocoin, Bill is your go-to guy.”

Pudsemand og kone

Pudsemand & Kone, also known as Henrik and Tina, are “one-of-a-kind-cachers”, and not just because they attended the first geocaching Giga event this year. Geocacher hvidhoej says, they “are the most social, friendly, nice, caring, happy geocachers I’ve ever met. They arrange 3 to 4 events every year opening their private homes to up to 200 geocachers. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet other ‘cachers, to talk geocaching and have a nice time. And the events are always successful, with many new and interesting caches in all categories from kid friendly to D5/T5. If I am ever in need of a good geo-advice or in geo-trouble they are always there for me and others.”

DrJay

DrJay started geocaching in 2005 and is approaching an impressive 9500 finds, but the contribution he makes to his local geocaching community is even more impressive. According to geocacher firennice, “DrJay is one of those cachers who works as hard at caching, as he does at work. He has taken the reigns of our local geocaching organization and makes sure that we have had events every spring and fall for the last few years…dragging BBQ grills, and food to them all. He always takes the time to visit and answer questions with new cachers. Help them with ideas, and give them advice on what they can do to enjoy caching even more.

2 Steps to Help Keep Your Travel Bug Traveling

2 Steps to Prep Your Travel Bug® for Its Journey

TB2.2

Everyone is doing the Travel Bug® 2-Step. Here’s how. It begins a bit like dropping your kid off at school for the first time. He may cry and stomp his feet, refuse to walk into the classroom, but in the end you know he’ll make it through just fine. Your Travel Bug is much the same. It might be difficult to part, but because you’ve taken the two key steps to ensuring his journey is successful you know you’ll see him again (online):

1. Seal the Travel Bug in a small plastic bag to prevent damage from moisture.

No matter how cute that little toy might once have been, if it’s icky now most people will take a pass. Nobody likes picking up a dirtied, smelly Travel Bug…queue the Ziploc. Some Travel Bugs are even sent off with provisions: sewing kits, an extra key chain, or superglue. You decide what goes in your Travel Bug’s luggage.

2. Include a note with a description of your Bug’s goal

Put yourself in the place of a first-time geocacher. You probably know slightly more about rocket science than about trackable etiquette. As a trackable owner, it’s difficult to fault a newbie for accidentally moving your Bug in the opposite direction it wants to go…but you can certainly prevent it! Make it clear that your Travel Bug wants to visit every country in Europe with a monarchy by writing this clearly on a note. Not only will this ensure that your TB isn’t accidentally brought to Fiji, it will also introduce new geocachers to the idea of Travel Bug goals, so they look out for them in the future.

Geocachers who do the Travel Bug Two-Step help create the beautiful global choreography that unfolds in this Travel Bug® Travels video.

September’s Geocacher of the Month: Event Extraordinaire!

Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Kings must have difficult and weighty responsibilities—but none so difficult as naming the Geocacher of the Month, we think.

The nominations for September’s Geocacher of the Month include a globe-trotting ‘cacher, the founder of a GeoCamping group, and a man whom many tribute as the greatest CO in Sweden.

Nominated as an “unsung hero”, cincol’s accolades are certainly not going unsung anymore! This “gentleman and a geocacher” is credited with planting the seeds of geocaching in the United Arab Emirates. Christie says, “The UAE has a strong GC community and I could not be more grateful to him that this isn’t just something I can do when I visit the US in summertime. We will likely never meet but thanks cincol on behalf of the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman!”

fatkidsOTWunite is the driving force behind the Georgia Geo-Campers—a group of folks who mesh camping and geocaching in Georgia’s state parks. JunkingNGeorgia says, “[fatkidsOTWunite] puts a tremendous amount of work into these events every month, and always has a smile and laugh for all of us.”

1000sjöar is widely hailed as a “Swedish legend”. In Sweden, 10000sjöar is known as having hidden the most creative, interesting, and clever geocaches around (in the area? check out GC500Q5). Lok5 says, “This man has inspired a whole region in Sweden to start geocaching! He is always there if you need help in any way. With his creative logs, well-built hides, his sense of humor and his gentlemanly manners, he is with no doubt on of the uncrowned Geocacher Kings in Sweden!”

Drumroll please…

The September Geocacher of the Month award goes to fatkidsOTWunite! Hailing from Georgia, USA, fatkidsOTWunited has been geocaching for 7 years and has over 2,600 finds, but she stands out because of her incredible propensity to make others feel welcome in the game of Geocaching.

Congratulations to fatkidsOTWunite!
Congratulations to fatkidsOTWunite!

Although her work for Mega Events (like Going Caching), undoubtedly makes them incredible experiences for all, her specialty seems to be bringing smaller groups of folks together. fatkidsOTWunite is the driving force behind Georgia Geo-Campers, which geo-camps in a different state park for an entire weekend every month. In her nomination, LionsLair says, “She dedicates tireless volunteer hours working hand in hand with Georgia State Parks and each individual park manager to provide all attendees an experience that is not often offered to the general public.”

Everyone has something sparkling to say about the Geo-Campers group. Jane says, “Attending our first GA Geocampers event and not knowing a soul, [fatkidsOTWunite’s] friendliness, enthusiasm, and geo-spirit just amazed me and immediately made sure we met everyone! Now thanks to her dedication and hard work, we have a new monthly adventure of caching at a different GA State Park! Janet arranges moonlight ranger hikes, frogwalks, you name it!”

Scott says, “[fatkidsOTWunite] gives to Geocaching way more than she receives. [Remember] the old caching saying “Take something, leave something of equal or greater value”? Well she always leaves a “higher value” trade behind in everything she does.”

With her “terrific sense of humor” and “selfless” attitude, we’re happy to name fatkidsOTWunite as September’s Geocacher of the Month. And guess what? So were the 80+ folks her left nice comments about her.

“[fatkidsOTWunite] is very deserving of this honor and has always been a good steward of our sport. Very dedicated and always volunteering to help new and old cachers alike enjoy their adventures in caching!” says JB.

Thank you fatkidsOTWunite for all you’ve done to inspire and enthuse the geocachers you meet!

Oldest Unfound Geocache in Europe… Found! (12 years later)

84d50b3b-6472-4ec2-80d2-44b426d7c598
DeepButi on the hunt for caches.

The geocacher who found the oldest unfound geocache in Europe on a thin ridge line of one of Europe’s most imposing mountains, doesn’t even like climbing. In fact, DeepButi doesn’t like caves either, but when the prize at the end of the adventure is a First to Find (FTF) after 12 years, 1 month, and 3 days…well, there’s no stopping him then.

The Traditional Geocache, ‘Puppet Theatre stash on the Mont Blanc’ (GC89FF) sat undisturbed among frigid slabs of rock and shifting snowdrifts for years. Several intrepid geocachers had attempted the search—and some came very close—but none had laid eyes on the geocache itself.

DeepButi says, “One day, I found myself wondering why what seems like a reasonably accessible cache had not been found for almost eleven years.”

That’s right—”Puppet Theatre stash on the Mont Blanc” (GC89FF) was hidden on Mont Blanc by an Estonian team of geocachers (Tarmo Männard, Kaido Pähn, Üllar Rosenfeldt, Anu Audse ja Vilja Heinmets) on July 2nd, 2002. At 4074 meters (13,400ft) above sea level, the contents of the geocache were well protected. They included 9 chocolate medallions, 14 candies, 3 bags of Lipton tea, 3 boxes of matches, 10 whole-family tickets to the Estonian Puppet Theatre, a paper and a pen, and a geocaching letter in Estonian and in English.

This is the story of DeepButi’s FTF.

What a view.
A geocache is hidden here… somewhere

He says, “I love mountains. Hiking for hours just for the sake of it, probably getting a fantastic reward at the peak with astonishing 360º views. And then there was THAT geocache, a normal one I didn’t need any special tools for.

“And one day, I found myself wondering why what seems a reasonably accessible cache had never been found for almost eleven years. After having “Puppet Theater stash on the Mont Blanc” on my watchlist for years just as a curiosity, a find in Canada switched something in my mind. If “4.5lb Walleye” was already found, why not give GC89FF, oldest unfound in Europe, a chance? So I did.

“It was not going to be a simple cache hunt, nor a long hike or a complex cache hunt. From the very first minute, the planning and logistics made the ‘it’s the journey’ concept the key element of the whole adventure.”

A little bit of research showed that the team who’d hidden the cache had formed a normal hiking expedition up Mont Blanc. They were not climbing experts carrying special equipment. This reassured DeepButi; with correct planning, the geocache was reasonably accessible, but sometimes the mountain decides whether or not you find a geocache.

DeepButi says, “Three months later, on Sep 2013 I went there. A full five day alpine hiking experience. Some great caches. But weather, and specifically avalanche risk, makes its own decisions. We had to cancel the attempt at the very last minute as the route was not safe. Instead, we summited Mont Blanc…not bad as a substitute.

“Summer 2014 in central and Southern Europe has been, in weather terms, a disaster. Without the normal anticyclonic periods, finding a day for a second attempt was delayed week after week until we decided to try a small window on July 23-25. After a terrific hike from refugio Torino crossing the Vallee Blanche we arrived at Cosmiques, the logical starting point for the hunt, on 24th.

A perfect image of my mood.
Weather delays the hunt

“The noise of small avalanches surprised us at the East side of Maudit-Tacul creating some incredible moments I will keep forever. But it was not our day. The guard at Cosmiques told us of a recent avalanche and more expected. No way to go up for several days. At 4,000m high you don’t play with this kind of advice and I returned home in quite a bad mood.”

Finally, a window of good weather opened up a week in August, and DeepButi knew it had to be then. He arrived at Cosmiques with his guide, Fabio Levi, and the forecast was perfect.

He says, “And there we went. At 6:15am we started a hard hike up Mont Tacul. You need to be there to know what it is like, every meter of its iced slopes deserves the T5 [Terrain 5] rating.

“It took us almost three hours to move the GPS distance [from the geocache coordinates] from 1,600m to 500m…at that distance only a soft slope down remained and the objective was pretty clear: a group of rocks at the East edge of Col Maudit. An incredible vision. All my efforts at sight for the first time. White snow and black rocks. I love it.

“Once there, laminated photos of the cache location proved to be helpful. They allowed us to confirm the GPS arrow and directed us to the northern group of rocks. Fabio crossed the last aerial meters and found exactly what was on the images. He said, ‘I have something. A broken plastic box.’

Fabio, one second after making history: Found!
Fabio, one second after making history: Found!

“The best words I could imagine. I knew at once that “broken plastic box” could only mean one thing: the original box! Aha! Nobody was there to see two adults shouting and jumping like children at 4,000m meters high. It was an incredible end to a 14-month obsession, full of hope, despair, deception, and positive energy.

“Honestly speaking, the cache itself is not that difficult a find—a 7 hour hike is nothing special and the final spot is quite accessible. But you must plan to go there as only a geocacher can do, with a specific goal on your mind. And you have to convince yourself that, after 12 years there was no single reason to suspect it would not be there. And yes it was.

So, we did it. Because we knew we could do it.”

The NUKU Puppet Theatre confirmed the tickets are still valid and will be forever. One of the original geocache-placers still works there, and DeepButi is already planning his trip. Another one of the geocache owners is going to bring DeepButi some “fresh” candies the next time he visits Spain.

DeepButi was also FTF on the long unfound cache in Spain, and has some of the highest peaks under his belt. His next adventure?

He says, “I’m already thinking on my next “incredible one”…but it will have to wait sometime.

Carbon Hunter comments “Cachers from geocaching backwoods very seldom get recognised for their contribution – but they make a HUGE impact in countries all across the world. Cincol is just one of many such unsung heroes. He arrived in Qatar in the Middle East over 8 years ago as a brand new geocacher – and much to his dismay found that there were only around 5 caches in the entire country – and no active caching community. Looking in neighboring countries like Bahrain, the United Arab emirates and Oman – he found a very similar pattern. He then started a personal journey and grew hobby in the region. He has given a huge amount of time encouraging caching in the region through the forums, placing caches, taking newbies and visitors on 4×4 excursions to the desert, arranging events, linking with the natural history community, maintaining “abandoned” caches and in general promoting the game.”

This comment comes from LionsLair, who says, “Janet deserves the honor to be named geocacher of the month because of her dedication and hard work to make everyone’s caching adventure a positive experience that they will always remember.
She has been caching for 7 years and has 2650+ finds,Most importantly though, she has met countless friends along her journey.
She has hosted many events, both locally and side events for MEGAs in other states,( i.e. GWXI, HMGT, Going Caching) She has helped both behind the scenes and on the front lines to make many fond memories for everyone she crosses paths with.
She is the driving force behind the very successful “Georgia GeoCampers” group, which geo-camps in a different state park for an entire weekend every month. She dedicates tireless volunteer hours working hand in hand with Georgia State Parks and each individual park manager to provide all attendees an experience that is not often offered to the general public.”

Lok5 sings 1000sjöar’s praise: “My boyfriend and I first met this man when we found our first FTF. It was one of CO’s innumerable and, as always, well-created hides that we spotted after a sweaty climb. Close to the hide Mr 1000sjöar stood, ready to treat the FTF’s with coffee and homemade buns! This man has inspired a whole region in Sweden to start geocaching! He is always there if you need help in any way. With his creative logs, well-built hides, his sense of humor and his gentlemanly manners, he is with no doubt on of the uncrowned Geocacher Kings in Sweden!”
