Geocaching.com Leap Day – Leaps into the Record Books

It’s official! And there’s video to prove it. Geocachers didn’t just double the 2008 Leap Day totals – they combined to make Leap Day 2012 the biggest day in geocaching history. More geocachers logged caches on Leap Day 2012 than any other day in the 11-year history of the GPS-powered treasure hunting adventure. The previous all-time record was set on October 10, 2010 or 10-10-10. On that date 78,313 distinct accounts logged a cache.

As of 2:30pm PST on March 7, 2012 –

83,516 …geocaching accounts logged caches on Leap Day 2012. All told, geocachers logged nearly 300,000 finds and logs on Leap Day.

The old record of unique accounts logging geocaches has been beat by more than 5000.

Congratulations to all the geocachers around the world who united to log a geocache February 29. Thank you to the organizers of more than 900 geocaching events around the world.

A war-torn bridge along the banks for the Rhine River serves as the imposing destination for geocachers attempting, “The Rock” (GC1EJ43). Watch the Geocaching.com Presents video, “The Rock” to experience what over five hundred geocachers have accomplished. Go along as geocaching daredevils attempt this physically intense difficulty five, terrain five puzzle cache. The cache is one of Europe’s most popular geocaches with more than 300 Favorite Points. Geocachers should only attempt “The Rock” if they have advanced climbing experience and proper equipment.

Geocaching.com Presents: The Geocaching Block Party 2011

Watch this video to take a step inside the 2011 Geocaching Block Party. Nearly two thousand geocachers traveled from around the world to attend the event. Sunshine welcomed fans of the high-tech GPS-based treasure hunt to a plaza outside the future Groundspeak Headquarters.

Attendees earned this special souvenir

Block Party  attendees explored the neighborhood around Groundspeak Headquarters by completing “Fremont Challenges”, socialized while filling out their Geocacher Bingo sheets, plunged Groundspeak Lackeys and Reviewers into a dunk tank, and pinned the antenna on signal. Geocachers could also test their skill at beginner, intermediate and advanced geocaching courses.

Come visit us next year for even more surprises! The best advice is to plan ahead. The Geocaching Block Party 2012 occurs on International Geocaching Day each year. It’s the third Saturday of August. Next year all the Lackeys would love to see you at the Geocaching Block Party on August 18, 2012.
