FAQs: The lost treasure of Mary Hyde

We have introduced you to the infamous Captain Mary Hyde, who ruled the high seas for many years, and found no shortage of riches throughout her reign.

We’ve come upon her letters, found in bottles on the shore near Geocaching HQ with instructions to join us for a swashbuckling geocaching adventure through daring feats and stormy seas.

Attend a geocaching event on July 15 or 16, to build your crew* and earn the ‘Ahoy Me Hearties’ souvenir. For the following 4 weeks (July 17-August 13) earn all 4 souvenirs to complete the treasure map and receive the treasure chest souvenir.

*Don’t sweat! You can still join the quest, even if you can’t make it to an event this weekend!

Make sure to log your finds and the events you attended no later than Tuesday after each week has commenced to be eligible for the souvenirs!! Souvenirs will be awarded Wednesdays (UTC).

What is a Friend League?

The Friend League is a brand new feature on Geocaching.com. It’s a leaderboard that shows you and your friends’ geocaching activity. If you log a cache, attend an event, or complete another geocaching task, you’ll collect a specific number of gold coins.
But there’s more to the Friend League than friendly competition. You can see a total score of all gold coins you collected together as a team and you can see what your friends have done to earn these coins.

Every week you have a new chance to be first on your Friend League. Mondays at 5am PDT, noon UTC the gold coin count goes back to 0 and it’s anybody’s game.

How can I add friends to my Friend league?

To add new friends to your Friend league follow these steps:

  1. From the left hand side of your new dashboard, or on the old version on the right side under the ‘Community’ section, select View friends.
  2. Under Add a friend, enter your friend’s username.
  3. Select Send Invitation.
  4. Enter a message for your friend.
  5. Select Request Friendship.

Once your friend has accepted your friend request, they will be added to your friend list.

See all pending friend requests under Pending Friend Request.

I don’t have any geocaching friends, what can I do?

You can still earn the souvenirs on your own, if you reach the required number of gold coins each week.
But if you would rather search for treasure with a crew on your Friend League, we’ve got you covered!

  1. Attend a geocaching event. Attending geocaching events is the easiest way to make new friends in the real world. Make sure to note their username and invite them to become friends on Geocaching.com. Bonus: You’ll earn gold coins when attending an event. Find an event near you.
  2. Search for a local geocaching organization. One of the best ways to learn about geocaching and make friends is to join a Geocaching Organization. Find a geocaching organization near you.
  3. Look for Facebook groups in your area. There are many geocachers on Facebook that have created local groups. Search for geocaching+your location on Facebook and see if there is a group of like-minded treasure hunters in your area.
  4. Share your username in the comment section of this blog post. If others follow suit, you can add each other on Geocaching.com and make friends all over the world!
I like to geocache alone, can I still earn all of the souvenirs?

You can still earn the souvenirs on your own if you reach the total required number of gold coins each week.

Make sure you sign up for the Weekly Newsletter and Educational and Promotional in your email preferences!

What if I haven’t logged my geocaches before Wednesday (UTC)?

We need to know if you qualify for the souvenir by Wednesday at 5 am (PDT), noon (UTC) to be able to accurately assign the souvenirs. Make sure to log all your caches by then!! (Convert to local time here.)

Why does the Friend League show only some of my friends?

The Friend League is currently set up to show the top ten members of your crew – always including yourself.

I logged a Lab Cache, why didn’t I earn any points on the Friend League?

At this time, the Friend League does not award points for finding Lab Caches because the functionality is not supported.

Why is my Friend League not showing gold coins for geocaches I found?

There could be a few reasons why gold coins are not showing on your Friend League.

  1. You logged on a Monday before noon UTC (convert to your local time here). We suggest that you wait to log until AFTER Monday noon UTC – which in some places like New Zealand is Tuesday at midnight – to log your geocaches. Otherwise those coins will not count for the current week. If you have already posted your logs, select “View / Edit Log / Images”, then click the pen icon and “Submit Log Entry” on the website. Make sure you chose Monday as the log date. That will auto-populate the time to noon and your log will count for the week.
  2. You saved a Draft on a Monday before noon UTC. Even if you submit the log later, the system will register your log for before the date. The same solution mentioned under 1. should apply here as well.
  3. You changed a “Write note” log to a “Found it” log. The Friend League does not record this information and won’t recognize when a Write note log is changed to a Found it log. In that case please archive your Found it log and post it again to collect gold coins for your efforts. (Don’t forget to copy your log text before archiving the log and make sure to chose the correct found date).
  4. You logged a ‘Webcam photo taken”. This log type did not count for the Friend League until August 3, 2017. If you logged a Webcam cache before that date, please delete and relog it to earn coins on the Friend League.
  5. You logged a Lab cache. Lab caches will not be part of the Friend League.
