Today we release a new country/regional souvenir for Egypt! If you have found a geocache in Egypt, you automatically receive the souvenir on your profile.

Along the shores of the Red Sea, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Cairo, you will find Soma Bay, a sunny beach area full of activities such as sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

For thousands of years, dangerous currents, strong winds, and a myriad of reefs have made this area difficult for sailors to navigate—which is why you will find several shipwrecks below the tranquil surface of the warm water (23°C/74°F). Many wrecks have become an oasis for aquatic life, but this one is especially amazing. It’s our Geocache of the Week.

To log this geocache, you must get from the shore out to the coordinates 450m (1500 ft) offshore. Most cachers work with a local dive guide to make the 20 meters (65 feet) dive down to the cache. It’s not blind foraging, however. A tethered rope acts as your guide, which is quite long, but the cache owner promises that the rope does actually end, so don’t get discouraged—just keep swimming!

Sea creatures abound here: octopus, moray eels, stingrays, boxfish, turtles, lionfish, and Spanish dancers. Many of them are active in the early part of the day then disappear until sundown, so plan on making this voyage earlier rather than later.

Several geocachers have made this their first dive find, but this ain’t no routine park and grab—scuba certification is required for this cache. This is a great way to combine two hobbies at the same time, geocaching and diving. And if you include traveling, that’s a triple threat! What hobbies do you combine with geocaching?
