A trip through history in New Jersey

Geocaching HQ staff attend dozens of Mega and Giga-Events around the world, shaking hands, sharing stories of adventure, and of course, geocaching. HQ Lackeys WanderingVenser and Dribblecastle recently attended the Metro Mega Gathering in New Jersey (GC9X6QF), Here is their trip summary.

On June 17, 2023 over 700 geocachers from near and far gathered in East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway, New Jersey to celebrate geocaching and the history of the state. The Old Town consists of a collection of reconstructed, relocated, and replica buildings that showcase the lives and styles of local communities in centuries past.

The organizing team prepared several new Adventures as a guided tour of the village and the additional points of interest around the park, which ranged from mock fishing and farming to the opportunity to watch a local league play vintage baseball! A field of vendors brought their arsenal of geocaching tools, containers, and even the occasional geocaching board game to delight the attendees.

The gathering highlighted many lesser known components of New Jersey’s role as one of the 13 original colonies during the American Revolution and in the early days of the United States. The day at the park felt like a day at an outdoor museum, one that transported the explorer to a time long past.

The best feature of any event like this, however, is always the people that form its heart. Thank you to the event hosts as well as all of the volunteers that helped put this event together and made it so special. You took us on a trip through history that we won’t soon forget!
