Adventure Lab Spotlight: Rellotges de Sol de Barcelona
In a place like Barcelona, bustling with locals and visitors going about their days and taking in the city, it can be overwhelming to decide what to do and see. Locations of the sundials range from a well preserved 18th century farmhouse to a cultural center built in 1991.
The Adventure begins at the Església de la Mare de Déu dels Àngels, an impressive church which was built over a decade in the 1940s and 1950s. The central tower of the church has elegant sundials on each of its four sides. Artists created the sundials using a technique called sgraffito, where a surface glaze is scratched away to create a design. After admiring the sundials and taking a look at the church doors in order to answer the Location’s question, you’re off to the next spot.
Perhaps the most impressive of the sundials in the Adventure is the one at the second Location, the Casa de les Punxes. This highly decorated building, built in 1905, is a feast for the eyes. On the building’s ceramic tile sundial, designed by the building’s architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, you can see illustrations of a sun and several zodiac signs. If you look carefully, you’ll also see that the dial is also a calendar.
The five Locations of the Adventure are all within about a mile (1.6 kilometers). Depending on your pace or what else you’re doing, you could complete the sequential Adventure in less than an hour, or turn it into a leisurely stroll, taking time to enjoy this alternative tour of a beautiful city.
