I <3 Geocaching Lab Caches from the Geocaching Community

I heart blog-header

At the beginning of this month, the I <3 Geocaching Lab Cache experiment launched. During the month of February, Geocaching Premium members have the chance to create a temporary, personalized Lab Cache for one special person. This new test is different than normal geocaching and is open to all sorts of creative interpretations. In fact, in the short two weeks that the test has been live, we’ve already seen a number of amazing Lab Caches from the geocaching community. If you’re a Geocaching Premium member and you haven’t created your Lab Cache yet, do it here, then post your ideas in the comments below.

A few comments from FlyingMoose regarding his Lab Cache: “I think what inspired me was that only one person could log the cache and I wanted more to enjoy making the find. As for the responses to the cache? I would say that the responses have been positive, who wouldn’t like the idea of claiming such a unique find? I heard about the Lab Caches last year and thought they were a cool idea, when I heard we could create our own I thought this would be a great chance to do something fun for everyone and I hope to find a bunch of ballots next week when I open it up and pick the winner! “

Staying in Touch from 2300 Miles Away

Jennifer finds her Lab Cache!
Jennifer finds her Lab Cache!

This story comes from Geocaching HQ’er, Maria: “I sent a small plastic container to my father in AK [Alaska, USA] via mail to hide for my bestie since 6th grade, Jennifer. I had him hide it on his property in an old CAT grader. This particular location served multiple purposes. First, my dad could see the grader out his window. This meant that when Jennifer came to find it he could watch, I got a play-by-play on my voice-mail of her entire adventure. Second, Jennifer got a huge promotion at her job (a CAT dealership) this year and her co-workers are always grading on her nerves…see what I did there? So punny. Anyway, Jennifer was ecstatic and my dad loved being part of the action. It was a great way to stay connected to people I love who live 2, 300 miles away. “

Love is in the air. And locked to a gate. — Love Lock Eeuwige Liefde !?! (GC41QJY) — Geocache of the Week

Geocache Name:

Love Lock ♥ Eeuwige Liefde !?! (GC41QJY)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

2/1.5 (but that might change as more locks are added to the gate)

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

It’s mid-February and love is in the air. It also happens to be locked to a gate in Antwerpen, Belgium. While this isn’t the first love lock geocache (you can see more of them here), this one is unique in that this gate was created for this specific purpose. Plus, it has a giant heart built into it and who doesn’t like that? Geocachers show their geocaching love in many ways. For some, it’s as simple as finding and hiding geocaches. Others take it a bit further with trackable stickers and other geocaching swag. And then there are some that go totally above and beyond with trackable geocaching tattoos. Some geocachers even show love to each other through geocaching. There have been a lucky few who have used geocaches to propose to their significant other. With Valentine’s Day coming up in many countries, it’s time to think about how you would show your love with a geocache.

What the geocache creator, Dan Pan, to say:

About this geocache: “This exclusive location situated at ’t Eilandje affords a unique atmosphere with a breathtaking 360° view of the city at the MAS (Museum Aan de Stroom), the river Schelde and the port. This place is the city’s new icon, ‘a bridge’ between port, river and city. This combination is what makes this place unique: it is ‘Antwerpian’ and it is global. Couples can eternalize their love by hanging a ‘Lovelock’ at the monument and throwing away the key in the Schelde. This monument is designed in scale of the Cathedral and integrated in the quay. With an eyewink to the Antwerp diamond centre, this beautiful piece of art will capture and save the love of many romantic couples!”

Regarding all of the positive logs and Favorite Points: “I Love to read them. They give me a lot of satisfaction, an appreciation for my creativity. They inspires me to make more lovely caches and do better.”

A message to the geocaching community: “Lock Up Your Love , Go Geocaching! I’m looking forward to your visit.”

What geocachers are saying:

“Found this one on our vacation during New Year’s Eve. Although it was freezing cold, we really enjoyed this cache! Took us a little time to solve the “puzzle”, but if you are attentive it’s easy to understand 😉 Thanks for showing us Antwerp.” — Loewenkinder

“Wow! What a great cache! Superb idea, location and actual cache container! Very clever indeed! We love Antwerp and this is one of the best caches we have found so a well deserved favourite point is heading your way! TFTC – brilliant!” — Berticusdan

“Superbe Cache! Very well done. I had to think more than twice. At the end, my muggle colleage has seen the clue…. I had the right idea, but as so often, not worked on it long enough. Worth a Favorite Point! Thanks for showing me this spot!! TFTC!” — coordinatius

A Busy Day for Geocaching HQ’er MissJenn in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Unfortunately MissJenn couldn't bring this Corvette back with her to Geocaching HQ.
Unfortunately MissJenn couldn’t bring this Corvette back with her to Geocaching HQ.

I had the pleasure of attending the GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This exhibit has been the torque of this town (get it?). See it while you can. It will be there until May 4, 2014.

Many of us took advantage of this very rare opportunity to have a so-called “Busy Day of Geocaching” – a day in which you can find a full dozen different cache types. The eager community fastened their seatbelts to geocache across Bowling Green. Up for grabs were a CITO event, a regular event, some experimental Lab caches, a Wherigo cache, as well as the Maze Exhibit itself. At least one Bookmark List detailed the possibilities. The Middle Tennessee Geocachers Club (MTGC) came out in full force to support this Busy Day with a cheery group of volunteers clad in blue t-shirts made just for this day.

Corvette Lab Caches.
Corvette Lab Caches.

We are most grateful to Melinda of the 6Lindseys, a Bowling Green local and veteran geocacher, who was instrumental in making all of this happen—and all on her birthday! She and the MTGC secured a generous stack of door prizes that filled up an 8-foot table: boots, GPS devices, unactivated trackable items, swag for cache containers, area souvenirs and much more. Thank you to these organizations that support the geocaching community so generously.

The 10 Lab Cache containers were judiciously painted with colors relevant to that portion of Corvette design history, matching the cars displayed as each Lab Cache’s cover image. Additional decoupage treatment completed the iconic look of each one. I was tempted to take one these attractive containers back to Geocaching HQ with me. It’s a good thing that I didn’t: rumor has it that these 10 will re-appear nearby in another Corvette-related project.

And now, it’s time for some photos:

A Corvette mockup.
As soon as you drive up to the Corvette Museum’s expansive grounds, you are greeted by this enticing mockup of the early Corvette body style. This was made even more enticing because parked right behind it was one of the Lab Caches. MonkeyBrad and SalPal make the find.

Editors Note: We’re very sorry to hear about the sinkhole that opened up in the museum. We’re incredibly glad that no one was hurt in the disaster and incredibly sad that 8 beautiful Corvettes were destroyed.

High-class shopping in the middle of nowhere. — Prada, y’all! (GC1W1KC) — Geocache of the Week

Geocache Name:

Prada, y’all! (GC1W1KC)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

2/1.5

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

Rodeo Drive, Fifth Avenue…middle-of-nowhere, Texas? If you’re trying to figure out what these places all have in common, it’s something you would probably never expect: Prada. Yes, the luxury clothing brand you can see fancy people around the world wearing. There’s one thing different about this Prada store, though: it’s never open and it only has right-footed shoes. Just outside of Marfa, Texas, artists Elmgreen and Dragset collaborated with multiple people, including Miuccia Prada herself, to create this piece of installation art. While the shoes and handbags in the store are pretty, we think the smiley you earn for finding the nearby geocache is way cooler.

What the geocache creators, The Stray Gatts, to say:

“We had just visited Marfa and were continuing west when we ran across this amazing, surreal place in the middle of the desert. We were stunned that there was not already a geocache there so we just snuck one in. We had no idea that it would become as popular as it is, but in retrospect it is such an unusual site that it makes sense. We’re honored by the positive reviews and favorites, but we are most happy that we have been able to help a few other people discover it. I’d love to give a huge shout out to the amazing geocache community: “Hey Geo-Brothers and Sisters… CACHE ON!!”

What geocachers are saying:

“This was my favorite cache of the whole trip. I love Prada and I love Marfa (it was my first visit) with it’s great stories, food and cute hotels. What a great idea, to put a cache here. I am sure we would have missed this if there was not a cache.” – Mrs_HiDude

“We just had to check this one out! Never would have believed this. Just another reason to get out and geocache. Thanks for putting a cache here.”  – DaveandDeb

“This was the highlight of the whole trip. The wife loved it! Found the cache quickly, then hung around to snap a few photos. What a riot! TFTC!” – HoustonControl

When a geocache is more like a theme park. — Dead Men Tell No Tales (GC46ZT4) — Geocache of the Week

This geocache even has a trailer.

Geocache Name:

Dead Men Tell No Tales (GC46ZT4)

Difficulty/Terrain Rating:

5/5

Why this is the Geocache of the Week:

Some geocaches are great because of the container. Some are loved because of the location. Some geocaches get their favorite points for the adventure they provide. And some—like this one—combine all of those things together to create something that is almost unimaginably cool. This geocache includes head-scratching puzzles, epic T5 tree climbing and loads of adventure—all of which is completed at night. To top it off, everything is wrapped in a great pirate-themed storyline and is maintained by an incredibly dedicated team. While we can’t give away any spoilers, it’s safe to say this geocache is on another level. On Geocaching HQ’er had the opportunity to complete this geocache during a recent trip and couldn’t stop raving about the adventure. If you have the chance, set out to find Davey Jones’ heart!

What the geocache creators, Capt. Kidd, Blackbeard and Henry Morgan, have to say:

Editor’s note: The geocache creators elected to stay anonymous and only use their pirate names. Their reasoning: “The cache is more important than us and should stand for itself.”

Regarding the inspiration: “I would say that some geocaches we found inspired us to build a cache of that size. Our main idea was to build a cache we would like to find. So we collected the best ideas for stages we saw and solved during our caching tours…The whole cache should be as balanced as possible. From fun to action to physical stages to tricky riddles…As you can see the whole cache is a pirate theme. So our main influence was of course the Disney attraction ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean.'”

Time and effort in this geocache: “I would like to say that planning the cache took us about a year. The whole budget is over 1000 EUR now as we have operating costs. It took us 4 month to build the stages, building and collecting props. And another 6 weeks to install everything in the woods…As we want to provide each team the exact same cache experience it is crucial that we check the whole cache one or two days before a team arrives.”

Regarding all of the positive logs: “I would lie if we are not happy to read those logs. Especially we are very happy that, in the first logs, people pick up the story that well and write their own pirate adventures.”

To the geocaching community: “People work hard to provide you an adventure or lifetime experience. Please handle everything you find with care! Think first! If you destroy a stage you destroy the experience for others…”

What geocachers are saying:

(all translated from German)

“In order to experience something great, you don’t need to spend a ton of money on a theme park; you have a theme park right outside your front door.  Once again, thank you so much.” – water & sun

“See this great experience for yourself. There’s an eye-opening effect at every stage. Thank you to the owner for your efforts in this area and this cache.” – wanderhapf

“A beautiful story with me and my team through the night. There were great and imaginative stations I was able to admire and as a reward I was able to free the heart of Davy Jones! A great adventure and a good story were crafted in this treasure.” – Ritter Kunibert
