With its location in the heart of the Middle East, Jordan has long been a country of geographic and historical significance. For geocachers in Jordan, the country is even more impressive because of the variety of geocaching experiences the country offers. Geocache outings in Jordan range from finding caches along the shores of the salty Dead Sea, to a search in the red-orange sand dunes of the Wadi Rum desert, or a find in the bustling capital city of Amman.

Of all the fascinating sights in Jordan, there is probably none more famous than Petra, an ancient city in eastern Jordan that is famous for its rock-cut architecture. Petra is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and geocachers might recognize it as a souvenir from our Wonders of the World campaign. The city dates back to prehistoric times and was an important caravan center during the Roman period. It is here in this breathtaking location, where you will find our Geocache of the Week, Petra (GC282A).

A visit to Petra is an all-day experience for a geocacher as there is so much to explore and several caches hidden there in addition to GC282A. Geocachers can wander around centuries-old tombs while searching for information to log an EarthCache, or hunt for clues for a Virtual while marvelling at the iconic facade of Al Khazneh.

Besides being our Geocache of the Week, the 19-year-old GC282A also has the distinction of being the first geocache that was placed in Jordan. To find this cache you will have to navigate away from crowds of visitors to a rocky hill in Petra, where you will enjoy a 360° view you might otherwise miss.

This cache is not necessarily a quick find and getting to the cache’s logbook will require some persistence. Previous finders recommend paying close attention to the altitude of the location that is given in the hint on the cache page.

Cachers who make it to the top of this hill will enjoy a sense of satisfaction and wonder as they sign the logbook and look out over this incredible ancient city.
