This week’s cache, Patapampa (GC2F7KE), takes geocaching to a new level!

At more than 16,000 feet (4,800 m) elevation, one might think this cache is in a league of its own. In reality, this cache is in good company as one of more than 50 caches hidden across South America that exceed 4,800 m.

Patapampa means high plains in the Quechua language—a fitting name for the high mountain pass where this cache resides. For centuries, countless travelers used this pass to cross the Andes, leaving behind thousands of apachetas (stacks of rocks) to mark their journey. However, before an exhaustive search among the rocks, a wise geocacher knows to check the cache page for clues.

Today, Patapampa Pass is a scenic viewpoint and a much-needed rest stop for travelers. In addition to being one of the highest paved roads in the Americas, Patapampa Pass also boasts one of the highest public restrooms in the Americas. For those who have read the hint, this lofty lavatory might be worth a visit.

This cache’s 1.5 Terrain rating is deceiving as it doesn’t take into account the altitude, which can overcome even the toughest geocacher. At 16,000 feet, many experience shortness of breath, headaches, and confusion. Slow and steady is the real hint to finding this cache. Take time to catch your breath and enjoy the views as you search. You may even catch a glimpse of the volcano Sabancaya erupting in the distance.

Mission accomplished! While the cache container might appear unremarkable for such a lofty destination, the satisfaction of the find is its own reward. Celebrate your victory with some SWAG and maybe even a trackable. As always, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value. Make sure to tightly close the cache container and replace under cover to protect it from the elements.

Placed in 2010 by mattenmuehle (and replaced several times since), Patapampa has withstood rain, snow, and intense sun to remain a must-cache destination for geocachers visiting the Peruvian Andes. As many previous loggers note, this cache is a delightful addition to an already amazing destination. And, who knows, you might even make a new friend or two along the way.
