Adventure Lab Spotlight: Cementerio de la Recoleta – La Recoleta Cemetery
For this edition of Adventure Lab Spotlight, we travel to Argentina to visit La Recoleta, a cemetery that the BBC included in their 2011 list of “The world’s best cemeteries.” Ornate mausoleums, crypts, and statues fill the 14-acre space, which is a resting place for many notable Argentinians. The non-sequential Adventure, Cementerio de la Recoleta – La Recoleta Cemetery, guides explorers to five different Locations highlighting different artistic styles, and stories of Argentinians who have passed on.
The first Location listed for the Adventure is the tomb of Liliana Crociati de Szaszak, who died at age 26 in an avalanche in Austria. This is one of the more well-known spots at La Recoleta because of its unique look. The tomb has a Neo-Gothic style and features a statue of Liliana Crociati de Szaszak and her dog.
Another memorable place you’ll find on this Adventure is the mausoleum of Salvador María del Carril and his wife, Tiburcia Domínguez López Camelo. Salvador María del Carril was the first Vice President of Argentina and later also served on the Argentine Supreme Court. In addition to his successful legal and political career, Carril is also remembered for the tensions in his marriage brought on by the large debts his wife accumulated. In 1862 Carril decided to separate himself from any responsibility for those debts and published a letter to his wife’s creditors in the newspaper, announcing that he was not responsible for paying his wife’s debts. When you answer the question for this Location of the Adventure, you’ll notice that Tiburcia made sure her back was to her spouse in the design of the mausoleum she commissioned for him.
If you have a limited amount of time to visit the cemetery, you should be able to complete the Adventure in under an hour if you stick to just stopping at the five Locations. But if you have more time, you could spend much longer wandering through the paths and marveling at the beautiful memorials. Plus, there is a bonus Mystery Cache for the Adventure if you want to make one more find.
