The Travel Bug® that traveled 63,000 miles is back home in the U.S. state of Oregon.

Astro the Eyepiece, a telescope eyepiece, was on the move for eight years before it was retrieved by its owner at Shelrik’s Happy Cache Inn (For TB’s & GC’s) this July 5th.

Geramy, a.k.a. CrazyGAF, released the Travel Bug in 2004 with this mission: “Astro’s mission is to travel East…a long ways East! You see, Astro is a telescope eyepiece and would like to travel to Greenwich, England…home of the Greenwich Royal Observatory and Greenwich Mean Time! After his trip he wouldn’t mind traveling the world a little more before, hopefully, coming back to his hometown of Portland, Oregon. He knows this may be a very long trip, but he’s ready! So…if you’re traveling East, please take him with you. If you’re traveling West, please let him stay. Thanks!!” -Cacheopia (now CrazyGAF).

The journey began when bbmagic grabbed Astro the Eyepiece on February 14, 2004, a few days after it was placed in the Cascades Parkway cache.

Geramy says, “this was our first bug that we ever released. Its original goal was to make it to the International Date Line. It did that and then it continued around the globe and made it back into our hands. We kept it for a little while and then let it go again. It traveled around again for quite some time before it got stuck in South Korea where we thought it might have been lost or stolen…but then it started up again and made it the rest of the way around the globe a second time.”

At this time Astro the Eyepiece is back home and getting some well deserved rest and relaxation.

According to Geramy, “We’re not sure we are going to send it on a third journey or if we are going to let it enjoy a life of retirement after such an active life. It seems to quite like our home here in Gresham, Oregon. After all… it has seen the whole world and always comes back.”

Astro das Okular: Die Geschichte eines Travel Bug® auf einer Mission

Der Travel Bug® reiste 63.000 Meilen zurück nach Hause nach Gresham, OR, USA.

Astro das Okular, ein Teleskop Okular, war acht Jahre unterwegs, bis er von seinem Eigentümer in Shelriks Happy Cache Inn (ein Travelbug Hotel) am 5.Juli wieder in entnommen wurde.

Geramy, a.k.a. CrazyGAF, schickte den Travel Bug im Jahr 2004 mit dem Ziel auf Reisen: “Astro‘s Mission ist reise nach Osten…den langen Weg nach Osten! Astro ist ein Teleskop Okular und möchte nach Greenwich, England…Heimat des Greenwich Royal Observatorium und der mittleren Greenwich Zeit reisen! Nach erreichen dieses Zieles, möchte er sich noch ein wenig die Welt ansehen, bevor er wieder zurück in seine Heimatstadt Portland, Oregon kommt. Er weiß dies kann eine sehr lange Reise sein, aber er ist fertig für den Trip! Wenn… Du also in Richtung Osten unterwegs bist, bitte nimm Ihn mit. Wenn Du nach Westen reist, dann laß Ihn bitte liegen. Vielen Dank!” –Cacheopia (jetzt CrazyGAF).

Die Reise begann als bbmagic Astro das Okular am 14. Februar 2004, aufnahm und wenige Tage später im Cascades Parkway Cache ablegte.

Geramy erzählt: “Dies war unser erster Travel Bug, welchen wir auf die Reise geschickt haben. Ursprünglich war sein Ziel, dass er die internationale Datumsgrenze überschreiten sollte. Es tat dies, dann ging es einmal um die Welt und wieder zurück in unsere Hände. Wir behielten Ihn für eine Weile um Ihn dann wieder loszuschicken. Es reiste wieder für einige Zeit, bevor er länger in Südkorea verweilte. Wir dachten, daß er verloren oder gestohlen wurde…aber dann begann er wieder zureisen und vollendete den Weg um den Globus ein zweites Mal.”

Momentan ist Astro das Okular wieder zu Hause und genießt seine wohlverdiente Rast.

Geramy: “Wir sind uns nicht sicher ob wir Ihn auf eine dritte Reise senden oder ob wir Ihn seine wohlverdienten Ruhestand nach solch einem aktiven Leben genießen lassen. Es scheint so, daß er sich ganz wohl hier in seinem Zuhause in Gresham, Oregon fühlt. Nach allem…er hat die ganze Welt gesehen und ist immer wieder zurückgekommen.”

And so it begins – The Great Geocaching Block Party 2013 Travel Bug® Race! Today we will release Trackables collected at the 2012 Geocaching Block Party into the Geocaching.com HQ cache. To fulfill their Travel Bug destiny and win a great grab bag of Geocaching.com swag and merchandise, these trackables must travel a minimum of 2013 miles and return to Geocaching.com HQ in Seattle prior to the 2013 Geocaching Block Party. Additionally, these TBs will compete in the following categories:

• Fastest TB back to HQ (after traveling the minimum mileage)
• TB with the most mileage
• TB to travel to the most countries
• TB with the best picture
• TB with the best log entry
• TB with the most geocachers who moved the TB
• TB with the most creative Hitchhiker (item the TB is attached to)

Lackeys will be competing in the The Great Geocaching Block Party 2013 Travel Bug® Race as well, but not eligible for prizes. Keep an eye on this blog post to check out these power racers in action. Best of luck to your Travel Bug and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Trackable Week highlights a new story Monday through Sunday this week about creative ways to experience Trackables. Geocaching.com Trackables allow people to tag and track an item from location to location. Scooby/Max Laevastu #1 TB Mover

How do you make your way to the top spot in the Trackable world? According to the top Trackable mover in the world, “It takes a lot of hard work, perseverance and a Zen-like stage of being at one with any Trackable.”

Max Laevastu, widely known as Scooby (of Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma), is now the number one mover of Trackables in the world. Amazingly, he has moved over 25,000 Trackables: Travel Bugs ®, Geocoins, and promotional tags, over the past six years. Max got an early start with his passion after a classmate in first grade introduced him to geocaching, and after their first geocaching outing, Max and his family were immediately hooked on the game.

A couple of years later at the age of eight, Max became fascinated by moving Trackables. Since then his passion has grown into an accomplishment that is respected and admired by geocachers all over the world.

Now, 14-year-old Max, with the full support of his family and friends, has accomplished his long time of goal becoming the top Trackable mover in the world. Max is known to the geocaching community as “the Trackable kid.” This is an incredible milestone for anyone, let alone a young teenager.

On a daily basis, Max will check Geocaching.com for heavily populated Trackable areas, and makes it a point to cache there with his family as soon as possible. The family’s longest streak was 75 days of geocaching, but according to Max, “If I had my way we would cache every day of the year.”

Max and his family credit the geocaching community with much of the support needed to help Max reach his goal. Back in January, the community held an event, “Scooby-Doobey-Doo We Got Some Work to Do Now!!!(GC37F8K).” On the morning of the event, Max was 600 Trackables behind the number one spot. Geocacher, Dave Coleman (a.k.a. Celtic Dave) created the event with one goal in mind, to bring Trackables to Max to help him achieve his goal. The name of the event was inspired by the famous Scooby Doo cartoon theme song, that goes with Max and his parent’s geocaching name perfectly.

The event had nearly 90 “attended” logs and roughly 800-1000 Travel Bugs were dropped. Scooby definitely got some work done, and this event accomplished his goal, moving him into the number one spot by just 25 Trackables. Dave, who has been friends with Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma for about six years now was very thrilled with his event’s turnout and the ability to help Scooby with his Trackable accomplishments; “Scooby has a determination when it comes to Trackables that is unmatched.”

Max’s parents are gracious and appreciative of the support of the geocaching community. They’re very proud of their son’s accomplishments. They write, “When Scooby sets a goal, nothing will stop him. He is one determined little boy. We love his enthusiasm and zest for geocaching.” They realize that without community support Max might not have made it to where he is today.

Max’s next goal is to maintain his #1 Trackable mover status by reaching a total of 50,000 Trackables moved. He says, “Back when I was so close to #1, I knew I could do it, and I wasn’t going to stop until I achieved my goal.” Max plans to keep up this enthusiasm for Trackable moving so he can get to 50,000 quickly. Cheers to Max for reaching his goal. It will be fun to support him in reaching his next milestone. Go Scooby! You got some MORE work to do now…

Scooby bewegt Travel Bugs wie niemand anderes

Wie schafft man es, an die Spitze derjenigen zu kommen, welche die meisten Trackables bewegt haben? Laut Aussage des weltweit erfolgreichsten Trackable-“Mover” benötigt man: “Viel harte Arbeit, Ausdauer und eine zenartige Verbindung mit jedem Trackable.”

Max Laevastu, weithin bekannt als Scooby (von Shaggy, Scooby und Velma), ist weltweit die Nummer eins beim Bewegen von Trackables.  Der Name ‘Scooby‘ kommt von einem US–Kinder–Trickfilm, über eine Gruppe von jungen Detektiven, welche mit ihrem Hund “Scooby” verschiedene Rätsel lösen.  Erstaunlicherweise hat der Geocacher “Scooby” über 25.000 Trackables (Travel Bugs®, Geocoins und Promotion Tags) in den letzten sechs Jahren bewegt. Max erkannte bereits in frühen Jahren seine Leidenschaft für das Geocaching. Nachdem ein Klassenkamerad in der ersten Klasse ihm Geocaching erklärte hatte, waren Max und seine Familie bereits nach ihrem ersten Geocaching–Ausflug, sofort von diesem Spiel gefesselt.

Ein paar Jahre später im Alter von acht Jahren, war Max fasziniert davon Trackables von Cache zu Cache reisen zu lassen. Seitdem wuchs seine Leidenschaft und seine Leistung wird von Geocachern auf der ganzen Welt respektiert und bewundert.

Jetzt mit vierzehn Jahren, hat Max mit der vollen Unterstützung von seiner Familie und Freunden, nach einer langen Zeit das Ziel der beste Trackable-“Mover” in der Welt zu sein, erreicht!  Max ist in der Geocaching–Gemeinschaft als “das Trackable–Kind” bekannt. Dies ist eine unglaubliche Leistung für jemanden, vor allem wenn man ein 14 Jahre altes Kind ist.

In seiner täglichen Routine prüft Max Geocaching.com auf Gebiete mit sehr vielen Trackables und macht es sich zur Aufgabe, dort so schnell wie möglich mit seiner Familie zu cachen. Die längste Strecke der Familie war an 75 aufeinander folgenden Tagen zu cachen, aber Max sagt: “Wäre ich etwas größer, dann würde ich jeden Tag des Jahres geocachen“.

Um sein Ziel zu erreichen, wurden Max und seine Familie von der Geocaching–Gemeinschaft unterstützt. Im Januar hielt die Gemeinschaft ein Event  “Scooby–Doobey–Doo We Got Some Work to Do Now!!! (GC37F8K)” ab. Am Morgen des Events, war Max 600 Trackables hinter der Nummer eins. Geocacher, Dave Coleman (a.k.a. Celtic Dave ) erstellte das Event mit dem Ziel, viele Trackables zum Event zu bringen, damit Max sein Ziel erreicht. Dave, der mit Shaggy und Scooby und Velma seit etwa sechs Jahren befreundet ist, war sehr begeistert mit seinem Event helfen zu können: “Scooby legt eine Entschlossenheit bei Trackables an den Tag, welche unerreicht ist.”

Max’s Eltern, Denise und Steve Laevastu, sind sehr dankbar für die Unterstützung der Geocaching–Gemeinschaft und sehr stolz auf die Leistung ihres Sohnes: “Wenn Scooby sich ein Ziel setzt, wird ihn nichts stoppen… Er ist ein kleiner Junge und wir lieben seine Begeisterung und seine Lebensfreude beim Geocaching.” Sie wissen, dass ohne Unterstützung der Gemeinschaft Max heute noch nicht da wäre, wo er jetzt ist.

Das nächste Ziel von Max ist die Aufrechterhaltung seines #1 Trackable-“Mover” Status, mit dem Ziel so bald wie möglich 50,000 Trackables bewegt zu haben. “Als ich so knapp an der Nummer 1 dran war, wusste ich dass ich es schaffen konnte und mich würde nichts aufhalten, bis ich mein Ziel erreicht habe.”  Max hält seine Begeisterung für Trackables aufrecht, so dass er sich schnell der 50,000 Marke nähert. Gratulation an Max für das Erreichen seines Ziel. Es wird Spaß machen, Ihm beim Erreichen seines nächsten Meilensteins zu unterstützen. Auf gehts Scooby! Es gibt jetzt etwas mehr Arbeit für dich zu tun…
