Moun10Bike’s top 10 geocaches

For the past 10 years, Geocaching HQ has been home to a geocaching legend. His name is Jon Stanley and he’s a member of the data team. But he’s better known as Moun10Bike in the geocaching world. As one of the world’s first-ever geocachers, Moun10Bike earned his geocaching fame by creating the first of what we now know as geocoins.

Moun10Bike has cached in nearly 20 countries and has some impressive stats to go along with his 19 years of geocaching. But we may have given him his hardest challenge yet: choose your top 10 most memorable (active) geocache finds. Without further ado, I give you Moun10Bike’s top 10 (in no particular order):

1 – Above the Clouds, Washington, USA (GCB67)
A fabulous climb up Washington’s most famous volcano: Mount St. Helens!

2 – Castello Baradello, Italy (GCWG86)
A nice hike to a hilltop castle south of Como that offers incredible views of the city, Lake Como, the Alps, and beyond!

3 – Warthog Down, Arizona, USA (GCGC55)
A challenging desert hike that involves fording the Virgin River and scrambling off-trail up through a canyon to the site of a 2001 crash of an A-10 Warthog.

4 – Amsterdam Urban 2 – Under the bridge (GC921)
Amsterdam, The Netherlands: A fantastic urban cache that consists of renting a canal bike and paddling out into the canals of Amsterdam. Awesome!

5 – Craters of the Moon National Monument, Idaho, USA (GCH0QX)
A grand Multi-Virtual that takes you to several outstanding locations in this beautiful piece of geologic history.

6 – Devils Tower National Monument II, Wyoming, USA (GC22DD)
A nice hike around the base of this iconic landmark that I’ve wanted to see ever since I was a small child.

7 – Half Moon Cache, Washington, USA (GC1221)
A long but memorable Multi-Cache with a fantastic final location that must be seen to be fully appreciated!

8 – Hidden Basin Geocache, Washington, USA (GC8E22)
An absolutely stunning hike into the North Cascades. After finding the cache, we continued on to the summit of Vesper Peak for extraordinary 360 degree views.

9 – Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks, New Mexico, USA (GC1TVB6)
A mini blizzard hit us as we started our hike for this EarthCache, but it soon let up and we were treated to a gorgeous walk through a snow-dusted canyon filled with amazing rock formations.

10 – Love Grotto, Alberta, Canada (GC849)
Walk up gorgeous narrow ravine in the Canadian Rockies to find this cache. A misty waterfall, sheer cliffs, and ancient petroglyphs await!

Bonus caches: (because when you have over 20,000 finds, it’s tough to choose just 10!)

Plains of Abraham, Washington, USA (GCGTYK)
A phenomenal, other-worldly location in a moonscape created by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. This is a must-see location, and if you are a mountain biker, a ride that must be added to your bucket list!

The Cologne Cathedral – A Geological Point of View, Cologne, Germany (GCZ8H7)
A visit to one of the most spectacular buildings in the world, the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Cool Place, Oregon, USA (GCGG27)
I had wanted to visit this secretive location since reading a newspaper article about it in the ’90s, and it did not disappoint when I finally got there!
