May 2nd marks the 15th anniversary of when Geocaching began. Get out on May 2 and May 3 to find a geocache—any geocache—or attend a Geocaching event—any event or CITO— you’ll earn a special 15 Years of Geocaching souvenir. Plus, you’ll discover your geocaching mission for the summer.

On the new search page, we’ve put together three new one-click searches to make choosing the geocache you want to find—and earn your souvenir with—easier. Just click the box to find events near you, the oldest geocaches in your area, or nearby geocaches with favorite points.

A Special Geocaching Mission to a Ghost Town

Any excuse to find a geocache in a ghost town, right? Geocaching HQ received notification that public access to the ghost town of Monte Cristo in the mountains outside of Seattle was about to be closed. Hazardous mining-related waste has to be removed. It’s the same location where Geocaching founder, Jeremy Irish and his wife Samsy placed one of the oldest c aches in the state, on November 19, 2000. We decided to use the last weekend before the closing date of April 15th, 2015 to retrieve the historic geocache.

An unexpected snowfall upped the terrain rating of the caching trip but gave us a chance to explore a winter wonderland. The 10 mile hike (including side excursions to cache) led us across rivers, through woods, and to crumbling miners’ homes.

We look forward to repeating the hike and replacing the cache when the mining town opens up to visitors again. Now to fill in the next hole for the Jasmer Challenge!

Vom 24.-27. April treffen sich Geocacher aus aller Welt bei Events, um die Landschaft zu säubern, Bäume zu pflanzen oder eingewanderte Arten zu entfernen und ein Souvenir zu bekommen. Suche im Eventkalender nach CITO-Events in Deiner Umgebung. Vergiss Dein “Will Attend”-Log nicht, damit die Organisatoren wissen, dass Du kommst.

Unlock Your 2015 Geocaching Mission on May 2 and 3

This May 2nd and 3rd, celebrate the history of geocaching by unlocking your mission for 2015. May 2nd and 3rd signal the beginning of geocaching, some 15 years ago. On May 2, 2000, GPS signals were descrambled, increasing the accuracy of GPS devices worldwide by ten times. The following day, what would become known as the first geocache was hidden.

Celebrate 15 Years of Geocaching on May 2nd and 3rd by finding any geocache or attending any geocaching event. You’ll earn a new digital souvenir for your geocaching profile.

Unlock details of your 2015 geocaching mission by reading the souvenir’s description. Join the conversation with your fellow geocachers on social media by tagging #Geocaching15 in your posts.

Thank You for a Deliciously Successful Pi Day!

On March 14, 2015, aka 3/14/15, geocachers around the world celebrated Pi Day by finding a Mystery Cache or attending a Pi Day event and earning two souvenirs. In case you missed it, there was another puzzle hidden within the souvenirs.

Take a look at the two Pi Day souvenirs. Notice the numbers and letters around the rim? Combine those to find the page for GC31415, which contains a very special message from one of the co-founders of Geocaching.com and a few delicious pi(e) recipes.

3.14 Things to Make Your Pi Day Event Epic

The first 2015 Pi Day Events are already happening. Find #GeocachingPi Day events near you. Here are 3.14 slices of wisdom to make your Pi Day event delicious.

1 – Eat Pie.

Apple pie, pizza pie, shepherd’s pie, it does not matter. All things delicious and pie like are always appreciated – especially at Pi Day events.

2 – Pi is an irrational number – so this is a good time to do something irrational (ok, maybe just different) with your event.

Think creatively about how you can have fun around geocaching and what activities you can have at your event to create that fun. Is it a pie eating contest or a competition to solve a math puzzle and open a geocache container the quickest? The ideas and opportunities are, much like the decimals in pi, endless.

3.14 – Share the event outside of the geocaching community.

Break out of your “algorithm” for inviting only your closest geocaching friends and think about others that we know that would enjoy geocaching (and pie) as much as we do. You can even invite them to invite their friends too (does that count as the .14?)
