Geocaching can vary around the world. It also varies for individual cachers. Sure, the concept is the same. Use coordinates to find a location, search until you make the find, open the container, sign the log, make trades, then replace the container. Repeat as often as the heart desires, or as often as the obsession requires.

I recently posted about finding a T5 geocache in my flip flops on my personal Facebook wall. Many of my geocaching friends around the world think I’m incredibly silly (or just plain stupid) for geocaching in my flip-flops, but I do it anyway. The T5 geocaches I’ve searched out this year in my flip flops were only accessible via boat/kayak, so my choice in caching footwear made perfect sense up to that point. But that recently changed.

The Masca Gorge is a Nature Conservation Zone

Some Multi-Caches are quick grabs that you can find during your lunch break, while others are much more labor intensive, taking you through multiple neighborhoods, around winding forests, or even requiring a drive to a different city. This T5 Multi-Cache, located in Spain’s Canary Islands, will send you on a three-hour long trek through a basaltic ravine to an isolated beach.

The journey begins in Masca, a small mountain village on the island of Tenerife. Home to only 90 inhabitants, the village is situated 650 meters (2130 feet) above sea level in the Macizo de Teno mountains.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom can keep geocachers away from this Letterbox Hybrid. Well, that’s not completely true since this cache is only accessible during business hours, but you catch the drift.

The posted coordinates take you just outside the Taipei Beimen Post Office. There, you must locate a small film canister with a key inside. Take that very special key, head inside the post office, and locate mailbox 59535. Inside you will find a manila envelope filled with a logbook, letterbox stamp, SWAG, and hopefully more than a few trackables.

Updated Geocache Hiding Guidelines

Today, Geocaching HQ is releasing updated guidelines for hiding caches. The main goal of the update is to make the Geocache Hiding Guidelines easier to read and understand. Here is what we have done to achieve that goal:

  • Improved guideline layout
  • Made text more clear
  • Reduced number of words by 15%
  • Moved supporting material to Help Center
  • Added some changes or clarifications to specific guidelines (see below)

In addition to the text updates, the page got a face lift, including better navigation! Read the new guidelines.
