Stretched along the western edge of South America lies Chile, a country spanning over 4,620 km (2647 mi) from north to south and taking the claim of the longest country in the world. Here are some other spicy facts about Chile:

  • Chile is the location of the driest place on Earth. Some parts of the Atacama desert have never received a single drop of rain, and the desert is quite possibly the oldest on Earth—it’s been around for about three million years!
  • Chile is one of the only countries whose government funds UFO research. It’s also one of the best places in the southern hemisphere for astronomers since northern Chile can have over 300 cloudless nights a year.
  • Chile also has amazing biodiversity. Native animals range from penguins to flamingos, and from pumas to chinchillas. It’s also home to the world’s smallest deer, the pudú, which weighs in at a tiny 6.4 to 13.4 kg (14 to 30 lbs).

EarthCaches don’t have physical containers, but instead, bring you to a unique location and teach you a geological science lesson. Check out these ten stunning EarthCaches from around the world for inspiration.

During the International EarthCache Day celebration, this special geocache type will be available to all members in the Geocaching® app.* The app makes finding and logging EarthCaches easy. Just send your answers to the geocache owner via Message Center!

Spain’s Treasure of the Temple Knights GeoTour (GT8C)

Geocache your way to find the “Treasure of the Temple Knights” (El Tesoro de los Templarios) in the Saja and Nansa valleys of Cantabria, Spain! Launching September 2018, Spain’s very first GeoTour (GT8C) will have 148 geocaches along the Iberian peninsula hidden in tribute to the 148 treasures placed by the Order of the Temple Knights. This may be the earliest reference to history’s first geocachers! Visitors will enjoy countryside tourism and a thrilling array of responsible adventure sports over the valleys’ 1,000 km² (386 mi²) of mountain ranges, national parks, and coastal scenery.
